Description: A cable-powered modular joint system, according to its manufacturer, can simplify how engineers put together arms for autonomous, humanoid, and factory robots. Igus GmbH, a company associated with plastic bearings and cables, says the system, Robolink, eliminates the need for developers to cobble together custom solutions from individual components. Robolink differs from conventional jointed arms in several ways. Most robotic arms are powered by servos or hydraulic lines. Igus has opted for cables. The arm itself is lightweight, either aluminum or carbon fiber-reinforced plastic. The modular approach promises a simpler path to robot development, according to Rudolf Bannasch, managing director of German bionic robot firm EvoLogics, which develops robots.
