Is it safe? Is the timing right? What are the alternatives? How can we maximize our chances of success? For the past 25 years, Jill Fredston has literally staked her life on finding answers to these questions. Her experience in mountain rescue has left her wondering why, given identical training and conditions, one person survived while another did not. Survivors tend to be those who get through the denial phase quickly, allowing them to perceive the problem more clearly and come up with a plan of action. What can fundamental rules of survival teach us about preparing for the future? How can we manage fear and even use it to our advantage? With extraordinary images and stories, Jill is able not only to bring us nose to nose with grizzly bears or to the edge of an unstable slope, but to bring a real-world perspective to weighing odds, fostering communication and making wise choices. Co-director of the Alaska Mountain Safety Center, Jill is one of North America’s leading avalanche experts. She has spent decades predicting avalanches, teaching potential victims how to survive and leading rescue efforts in Alaska. In summer, she climbs into an ocean-going rowing shell for long expeditions along the rugged coasts of Alaska, Canada, Greenland, Spitsbergen, and Norway with her husband Doug Fesler. Jill’s most recent book, Snowstruck: In the Grip of Avalanches, examines the forces of human nature that lure us into treacherous terrain. She is also the author of Rowing to Latitude: Journeys along the Arctic’s Edge, winner of the 2002 National Outdoor Book Award, and co-author of the authoritative Snow Sense: A Guide to Evaluating Snow Avalanche Hazard.
