2nd Urban Street Symposium
INTRODUCTION
The Urban Street Symposium is intended to provide a forum to: • • • • • • • compare and debate alternative suburban/urban street design practices, highlight discussion of problems caused by certain design practices and identify alternatives, examine long-held urban street design practices in light of the “new urbanism” movement, document better suburban/urban street design practices, promote the sharing of experience and innovations, transfer urban street research findings to state agencies and to local governments, and provide case studies and “how to” workshops.
This symposium will bring together individuals with experience or interest in urban street design and operations and will provide a unique opportunity for participants to exchange information and explore the myriad of issues that must be addressed.

1:15 p.m. TOURS • Tour A – Urban Street Design in the Anaheim Area: guided by John Lower, Traffic and Transportation Manager, City of Anaheim This tour will include Harbor Boulevard Redevelopment, Anaheim CDB redevelopment, Disneyland parking and traffic management issues, City of Anaheim Traffic Management Center, Orange traffic circle and other sites. • Tour B – Urban Street Design in the Long Beach Area: guided by David Roseman, City Traffic Engineer, City of Long Beach This tour will include concurrent HOV lane operations, Port of Long Beach (one of the world's busiest seaports) integration of LRT into arterial traffic control, City of Long Beach redevelopment, and the Long Beach traffic circle. 1:15 p.m. WORKSHOPS •

ADA Accessibility and Orange County Ballroom 1-2 Roundabouts (Access Board): Participants include researchers David Guth of the Department of Blind Rehabilitation at Western Michigan University and Ronald Hughes of the UNC Highway Safety Research Center, roundabout designer Bruce Robinson of Kittelson and Associates, consumers Jenine Stanley of Guide Dog Users International and Ken Stewart of the Council of Citizens with Low Vision International, engineer Joe Bared and civil rights staffer Barbara McMillen from FHWA, and research coordinator Lois Thibault from the Access Board. This workshop will review previous roundabout programs and current research. An expert panel will address key issues and assess proposed treatments to make roundabouts usable by pedestrians who have vision disabilities. Attendees will receive a copy of the Access Board's technical assistance bulletin on accessible roundabouts.

Context Sensitive Design: Orange County Ballroom 3-4 led by Nick Stamatiadis and Don Hartman, University of Kentucky This workshop will present the basic concepts of teamwork and public involvement which are essential in CSD, define principles of welldesigned roadways, demonstrate aesthetic treatments in roadway design, and present tools for approaching CSD solutions. Case studies that have incorporated these concepts will be included.

Prepare yourself for an exciting conclusion to the Symposium as two speakers approach this issue with opposing perspectives. Mr. Todd Litman, founder and executive director of the Victoria Transport Policy Institute, is on the board of the Canadian Centre for Sustainable Transportation. He will speak “for” Smart Growth, discuss market distortions, and describe examples of “win-win” market reforms.
Mr. Wendell Cox, principal of Wendell Cox Consultancy, is a visiting professor at the Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers in Paris. He will speak “against” Smart Growth and advocate a pro-choice approach to urban development. 11:30 a.m. CLOSING
