He has more than 20 years of experience in affordable housing in the Memphis (TN) area. During his tenure, the organization grew from a department of the United Way of the Mid-South to an independent organization, which provides homeownership opportunities to the residents of Memphis and Shelby County. Mr. Bolding serves on several local agency boards and at the national level with the FHLB Advisory Council. He received his BA and MA from the University of Memphis and serves as an adjunct faculty member of the department of anthropology at the university, where he teaches cultural anthropology. O’Brien is a resourceful practitioner, mixing her real life experiences with humor, to make complicated federal regulations understandable to any participant. _____________________________________________________________________ NeighborWorks Training Institute 1 Design and Development for Single Family New Construction CP221 COURSE OVERVIEW COURSE NAME: Housing Opportunities for New Construction COURSE INSTRUCTORS: Tim Bolding and AB O’Brien LENGTH OF COURSE: 3 Days COURSE DESCRIPTION: In the last several years there has been an explosion of nonprofit agencies entering the housing development scene. This course will enable participants to successfully manage a single-family new construction program. The course has two components: 1) the design and development of the overall project, and 2) the development of appropriate units for the project from acquisition to occupancy. This course is designed for construction managers, specialists or any other development staff members, embarking or about to embark on the construction of single-family residences, who have not geared up for new construction or have not developed a pipeline approach to production. This is the first course in the Single-Family New Construction series of courses. COURSE OBJECTIVE: This course will enable participants to successfully manage a single-family new construction program. The course has two components. The first component is the design and development of the overall project. The second component covers the development of appropriate units for the project from acquisition to occupancy. _____________________________________________________________________ NeighborWorks Training Institute 2 Design and Development for Single Family New Construction CP221 CORE COMPETENCIES: This course will enable participants to: Competency 1: Assess the neighborhood, the site, client demographics, and appropriate units by affordability. Competency 3: Identify the strengths and weaknesses of different approaches to new construction production. Competency 4: Devise and implement a policy and procedure for singlefamily “new construction” production.
