David Weiss (David Weiss Designs Fine Jewelry) was Chairman of the 2005 Board of Directors of the Chamber of Commerce.
With “Communication” their primary focus the board; consisting of new members Robert Ming (Resident Member), Terri
Reid (The St. Regis Monarch Beach Resort), Phil Foy (Tarbell Realtors) and Larry Tuohino (Smith Barney Citigroup); began
their term with an aggressive agenda to make becoming a member of even greater importance. With a membership event that
attracted 60 new members the total membership reached 434.

Community and education still a priority of the Chamber’s mission the education committee partnered with Mayor Joe Brown
of the City of Laguna Niguel and Marian Bergeson Elementary School to adopt the week of May 9th as “Read to Succeed
Week” and awarded $4,000 in scholarships to high school seniors. An event at Soka University allowed the Chamber to pres-
ent the Aliso Viejo and Laguna Niguel Police Services with night vision goggles and a South County Community Garage Sale
was held at Wal-Mart (who very generously matched the proceeds) to benefit local non-profit organizations.

Important issues at the County level were soil and ground water contamination as well as finding a way to relieve the increased
traffic in South County. A direct route tunnel system was proposed and a study begun for a 10-12 mile tunnel from the Inland
Empire to Orange County (Tri-Tunnel Express).

“A Night at the Races” was the signature event for Chairman Janet Mariner (Cures for Women) and the 2006 board of direc-
tors including new member Linda Lindholm (Resident Member). The event included video horseracing, a derby hat parade
and silent auction. Another successful breakfast auction raised over $4,500 for the scholarship fund.

Once again the chamber stepped up their website by posting all events and allowing reservations and on-line payment by credit
card or PayPal.

A coalition of chambers; Dana Point, Laguna Niguel, San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano held a summer mixer at the
Laguna Cliffs Marriott Resort & Spa in addition to Monarch Bay Plaza’s traditional Beach Cities Mixer, including Laguna
Beach. The chamber in 2006 made excellent progress to increase member participation.

Cassie DeYoung was Mayor of the City of Laguna Niguel. After sixteen years the Great Park Plan was presented to the people
of Orange County by the City of Irvine who then created a Great Park Corporation Board to govern and guide the develop-

Chairman Sheldon Pines (Transportation Corridor Agencies/The Toll Roads) took his board of directors to Palm Springs to
plan the events for the monumental 25th year of the organization. On the board with Sheldon were Phil Foy (Tarbell Real-
tors), Cristie Wallace (Paychex), David Russell Ohrn (South County Printing), Derek Quinn (OC Interior Fashions), Carole
Allen (Resident Member), Connie Burns (Connie’s Contractor Research Service), Duane Cave (SDG&E), Andy Favor (Resi-
dent Member), Wendy Harder (Soka University of America), Randall Krug (Krug Insurance Services), Jean Mead (South Coast
Singers), Mark Montgomery (Montgomery Photography) and Victoria Pore’ (State Farm Insurance).

The Laguna Niguel Chamber of Commerce had withstood the test of time, as had many of the networking events and pro-
grams. Mayor Gary Capata presented the State of the City report to the membership, the Holiday Tree Lighting, Government
Affairs, a record breaking $7,000 in scholarships, Principal for a Day and 25 years of serving the community pancakes on the
4th of July. A committee of volunteers recruited 115 new members increasing membership to an all time high of over 500

Along with tradition the chamber had become innovative. The chamber office moved to Forbes Road. With over 30,000 hits
per month www.LagunaNiguelChamber.net offered a wonderful opportunity for members to purchase banner ads and post job
openings. Cash cards were introduced to new and renewing members to be used as debit cards for chamber events. The inau-
gural Taste of Laguna Niguel, hosted by Mercedes Benz of Laguna Niguel for the benefit of Beta Foster Care, introduced mem-
bers and guests to many wonderful area restaurants, classic cars from the Mercedes museum and the 2008 Mercedes M-Class.

Earlier in 2006, Past-President Rick VanAlstine, who had relocated outside of Laguna Niguel, contacted CEO Debbie New-
man to arrange for a reunion of past presidents. Well what a reunion it turned out to be!! A committee of 18 past presidents,
chairmen and founding fathers met every month for a year to plan the 25th Anniversary Celebration of the Laguna Niguel
Chamber of Commerce. With Rick, as chairman of the committee (Hey, wasn’t he the guy who was chairman of the steering
committee for establishing a chamber back in 1982? And President of the Chamber that same year?) they planned an event
that drew over 200 people for a casino, live and silent auctions, hors dourest, complimentary photographs, live music and an
excellent dinner at El Niguel Country Club. It was a GRAND event with many people re-acquainting and remembering the
good people and good times they experienced through the years.

Here’s to many, many more years of Chamber success and continued prosperity to the members doing business in Laguna Niguel.
