									                         Damascus Summer Arabic Program

This is an intensive eight-week program to study Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) and
colloquial Arabic in the Arabic Language Center (ALC) at Damascus University.

       Levels of Instruction

   •    Lower-Intermediate: for students who have completed one year of academic
        Arabic or equivalent at an American academic institution.
   •    Intermediate: for students who have completed two years of academic Arabic or
        equivalent at an American academic institution.
   •    Advanced: for students who have completed three years of academic Arabic or
        equivalent at an American academic institution.
   •    Arabic for Specific Purposes (ASP): tutoring for small groups in different
        specializations (history, law, jurisprudence, journalism, political economy,

   (DAPT) on the first day of classes. The result of the DAPT will determine the level
   of admission.

       Course Information

   •    Classes begin: Sunday June 19th 2005.
   •    Classes end: Thursday Aug 18th 2005.
   •    Classes meet four days a week (Monday through Thursday), four hours each day.
   •    Total number of contact hours128 hrs; MSA: 90 hrs / Colloquial: 38 hrs.
   •    Number of students in each section: 2-10.
   •    Instructional materials: packets prepared by teaching staff.
   •    Instruction is only in Arabic.
   •    Method of instruction: communicative, covering the four language skills (Reading
        comprehension, speaking, writing, listening comprehension) in addition to
   •    Testing: weekly quizzes, one progress test and a final exam.


The ALC is located in the newly renovated Language Institute at the Humanities Campus
of Damascus University. Students will have access to:
    • Computer lab, T1 internet link, open to program participants (9:00 – 3:00) five
       days a week.
    • Video Room (14 separate viewing consoles for individual access) open to
       participants 5 hours daily, five days a week.
    • Library/study room: conveniently located in the main building of the institute
       (open 9 a.m.- 3 p.m.)
    • Two state-of-the-art language labs.


The Language Institute will provide free accommodation for three days after arrival in
Damascus. The Student Affairs Office will advise the students on their housing options,
and will offer help in directing students to the best housing options.

   •    Cost covers:
               Tuition Fees
               Transportation from and to airport upon arrival and return trip
               Free accommodation for three days after arrival in Damascus
               Securing residency papers from the Syrian Immigration Department
               Internet access, video room, library


Applicants are required to fill in the enclosed application form, mail or fax it to Student
Affairs office at ALC (to Dr. Mahdi Alosh if Ohio State University applicants), together
with your most recent transcript of grades, two recommendation letters, and one copy of
the identification pages of your passport. (full application materials should be in our
office no later than May15th 2005). Please Note:
    • Admission: Rolling admission (each application is evaluated individually)
    • Incomplete applications will not be considered.
    • Transcripts will be accepted on fax as long an original copy is received by Student
        Affairs office before the first day of classes.
    • All accepted applicants should pre-pay at least 25% of the cost of their course cost
        by June 1st. Please be advised that overseas wire transfers from the U.S. may take
        up to a week to reach their destination. The rest of the fees should be paid no later
        than June 10th.
    • Participants who wish to withdraw from the program will be reimbursed as
        - Withdrawing before June 1st                   Full reimbursement
        - Withdrawing before June 5                     50% reimbursement
        - Withdrawing before June 10th                  25% reimbursement
        - Withdrawing after June 15th                   No reimbursement
