Bed & Breakfast Program
Who can take advantage of the bed and breakfast program? This program is available to national student AMWA members traveling for residency interviews, to residents applying for fellowships or job interviews, and/or to physician members attending out of state conferences. How do I sign up? Traveling member will contact the AMWA national office with the details of the trip and the national office will provide a listing of member volunteers in the area in which the event will take place. Then the traveler will contact the potential host directly to make appropriate arrangements. Is the Bed and Breakfast program available in every city 365 days a year? This is a volunteer effort administered by AMWA. Although we have many members who have volunteered for this program, please understand that this program may not be available in every destination city. Furthermore, the member may be unable to host on the requested date due to a personal conflict. May I bring my spouse? This question will need to be individually requested to each host. Please remember, that some members may only be able to accommodate one person at a time. I know that AMWA recently opened membership to men. Is the Bed and Breakfast program available to male students? Again, this is a volunteer effort administered by AMWA. In this case, please have the president of your chapter contact AMWA and request a list of member volunteers in the area in which the event will take place. The chapter president will contact the member volunteers and ask if they will be willing to host a male. This additional step provides the local chapter the opportunity to vouch for the male member and protects the volunteer hosts from their information being distributed to anyone who joins via the web that is not associated with a chapter. Furthermore, some of our volunteer hosts may not be comfortable having a male member stay in their homes. How soon do I need to sign up? This service is a first come first serve volunteer effort. To be respectful, please give at least 30days notice so that your host may accommodate his or her schedule. Do I need to pay for this program? No, your national dues currently cover the administrative fees for this program. Do the hosts get paid to open their homes? No, this is a volunteer effort. Please remember to send your hosts a thank you note after you have stayed in their home. Who do I contact if I have additional question?
