Uganda – Nursing Students Global Health Professionals Survey (GHPS) FACT SHEET • • • • • • • • • • • • The Uganda Nursing Students GHPS includes data on prevalence of cigarette smoking and other tobacco use, knowledge and attitudes about tobacco use, exposure to secondhand smoke, desire for smoking cessation, and training received during nursing school regarding patient counseling on smoking cessation techniques. This information could be very useful in monitoring and developing Uganda’s comprehensive tobacco control program. The Uganda Nursing Students GHPS was a school-based survey of all 3rd year nursing students attending the 7 nursing schools in the Uganda. The school response rate was 100%, and the student response rate was 94.1%. A total of 444 students participated in the Uganda Nursing Students GHPS. Prevalence 5.0% ever smoked cigarettes (male = 14.4%; female = 3.2%). 0.5% currently smoke cigarettes (male = 3.3%; female = 0.0%). 1.5% ever used other tobacco products (male = 3.2%; female = 1.2%) 0.8% currently use other tobacco products (male = 0.0%; female = 0.9%). 20.4% smoked on school premises/property during past year. 6.5% smoked in school buildings during past year. Highlights Out of 100 students… • 1 currently smoked cigarettes and 1 used other tobacco products. 52 were exposed to smoke in public places. 96 supported a ban on smoking in all enclosed public places. Factors Influencing Tobacco Use 30.4% exposed to second-hand smoke at home, during past week. 52.5% exposed to second-hand smoke in public places, during past week. 23.8% think school has ban on smoking in school buildings and clinics. 79.3% think school enforces ban on smoking in school buildings and clinics. 49.5% think school has ban on smoking in indoor public or common areas. 50.9% think school enforces ban on smoking in indoor public or common areas. 95.9% believe smoking should be banned in all enclosed public places. 93.5% think tobacco sales to adolescents should be banned. 89.7% think there should be a complete ban on advertising of tobacco products 90.8% taught about dangers of smoking during nursing training. • • • Role Model and Cessation Training 72.6% think health professionals serve as role models for their patients. 35.1% received formal training in smoking cessation approaches during nursing school. 97.1% think health professionals should get specific training on cessation techniques. 35 received training to provide patients with cessation approaches. 97 thought health professionals should get specific training on cessation techniques to use with patients. • For additional information, please contact: Frederick D.
