Concurrent Teacher Education Program

Concurrent Teacher Education Program HANDBOOK Introduction The Concurrent Teacher Education Program (CTEP) is intended for students who wish to become school-teachers in selected areas of study upon graduation. This program is offered collaboratively by the University of Toronto's faculty of education, the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE/UT), and partner Faculties in the University of Toronto, including the University of Toronto Scarborough. CTEP enables students to obtain a B.A./B.Sc. concurrently with a B.Ed. At UTSC the subjects of specialization directly available to CTEP students are Chemistry, French, Mathematics and Physics. These are among the areas of highest demand for teachers in Ontario schools. CTEP students can prepare for teaching careers at both the elementary (Primary/Junior or PJ) and secondary (Intermediate/Senior or IS) school levels. CTEP candidates complete two undergraduate degrees simultaneously over five years (all candidates will complete the requirements for the Bachelor of Education degree, the B.Ed., under the jurisdiction of OISE/UT). Students intending to teach French must complete the B.A. Specialist degree in French at UTSC. Students intending to teach in the mathematical and physical sciences must complete the B.Sc. degree in an appropriate UTSC program involving Chemistry, Mathematics, and Physics, along with other related subjects. The B.Sc. program will be either a Specialist program or an approved pair of relevant Major programs. The requirements for the relevant B.A. and B.Sc. programs are described in the UTSC Calendar. One of the strengths of the CTEP is that students begin their teacher education and become engaged in teaching activities earlier in their undergraduate education. They develop experience in the teaching profession while continuing their subject specific studies as part of the B.A. or B.Sc. degree. This is in contrast to the consecutive approach of teacher education in which the subject specific study is carried out in the environment of the B.A/B.Sc., with minimal connection to the student’s development as a teacher, and then followed by the B.Ed. program, which focuses entirely on teacher education. The majority of CTEP candidates will join the program in their first year at UTSC, having been granted direct admission to the CTEP.1 Other students will gain admission following the completion of their first year of study at UTSC - these students must have a GPA of 2.7 or more after completing 4.0 full course equivalents (FCE) in the first year of a relevant B.A. or B.Sc. program at UTSC. 1 See the UTSC Calendar for further information on admission. 1 CTEP Staff at UTSC: a. Five-year CTEP Course Requirement Schedule (modified to reflect the specific details for UTSC-CTEP), which is available at the end of this Handbook. Program Requirements for CTEP at UTSC The combined program for CTEP involves program requirements for the B.Ed. degree and the B.A. or B.Sc. degree. The B.Ed. requires the completion of 5.0 FCE as part of the professional development of the teacher candidate. The B.A. or B.Sc. program requires the completion of 20.0 FCE, primarily concentrated in the academic areas where the candidate will eventually teach. In order to provide the broader background in the education and school context, the B.A. and B.Sc. degrees within CTEP have specific course requirements (normally 3.0 FCE) beyond those of the specific major or specialist program selected by the CTEP student. These additional course requirements usually appear as elective courses. Programs that fall within the CTEP at UTSC are Chemistry, French, Mathematics, and Physics. To be included, the program must result in teachers whose B.A. or B.Sc. concentration is appropriate to produce teachers qualified to teach in these areas in Ontario schools. In the case of primary/junior candidates, there must be significant concentration from these areas, although there will frequently be some additional area of reasonable expertise that is relevant to the primary/junior sector. An example of this would be Biology when done in conjunction with significant concentration in the above named four areas (the Specialist Program in Natural Sciences is a prime example of this option). The courses required for CTEP students beyond those required for their specific UTSC programs are given in the table below. In some cases, these courses may also be courses required by the specific academic program chosen, such as the Subject Studies for Teachers courses. The table also indicates the normal year of the program in which the particular course will be taken. There is considerable flexibility in the choice of 2 course sequence in order to ensure that CTEP students are able to schedule all required courses appropriately. It is particularly important that students consider the scheduling of the B.Ed. degree courses, since these are often more restrictive in scheduling requirements. B.A. / B.Sc. Subject Studies for Teachers courses (these should contribute to basic concepts required to implement the K12 curriculum). These courses are selected from among the course offerings at UTSC, and in some cases may be required in the academic program. Students are advised to consult with the appropriate CTEP Academic Advisor when making their selections.2 CTEP Internship (credit may be lower) with flexible timing, in or out of term, as individually arranged, in schools, community organizations, etc. Place in program Years 1 or 2 0.5 Years 1, 2, or 3 0.5 Years 1, 2, or 3 1.0 Years 1, 2, 3, or Fall Year 4 0.5 Years 3, 4, or 5 The CTEP Coordinator will work in collaboration with students, the course instructors and the OISE/UT School University Partnership Office (SUPO) to find appropriate field experience placements and internships for students. Students are also strongly encouraged to consult with their CTEP Academic Advisor when making their selections. The B.Ed. component of the CTEP requires the completion of 5.0 FCE courses including at least 60 days of practicum placement in schools. These courses are administered by OISE/UT. Some of these courses will be given at OISE/UT on the St. George campus, the majority of which will be part of the Professional Session that takes place in the winter term of the fourth year of the CTEP five-year program. 2 “Subject studies for Teachers” are specific courses that are offered through the CTEP program, and are different from teachable subjects. “Subject Studies for Teachers” includes any course that adds to your preparation as a CTEP student in your area of teaching interest; for example, a Canadian history course would be of particular benefit to a school history teacher. 3 B.Ed. This activity will normally include 10-15 days in schools or other relevant community organizations. CTEP students normally begin taking the Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment courses in the winter term of year 4, making it essential they complete a sufficient number of the subject specific courses that provide a basis for Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment courses by the end of the fall term of year 4. For most areas, this will require the completion of 4.0 or 5.0 FCE prerequisite courses in the specific discipline. Students should consider this when laying out their plans for the first seven terms of their academic program, since the Professional Session will normally occur in the winter term of year 4. Each CTEP student will develop a CTEP Portfolio - a collection of artifacts, assignments and reflective activities that mirror their growth as a CTEP candidate from student to professional over the course of the program (see below). First year: Selection of CTEP Programs of Study Students are strongly advised to consult the relevant CTEP Academic Advisor when choosing their CTEP programs of study, which will be either a single Specialist program or two Major programs (this latter option is only available to students in the CTEP in Chemistry, Mathematics, and Physics). Students who intend to do two Major programs, must ensure that at least one is from the list indicated in the Calendar entry for CTEP. These programs comprise a specific subset of the programs offered by the Departments. The second Major program or the 4 Minor program, and hence the second teachable subject, can also be from these listed programs, or from other subject areas offered by Departments at UTSC. The second Major must also lead to a recognisable teachable subject in Ontario schools. 3 It is important to note that a number of subject areas, or disciplines, offered at the University do not correspond to teachable subjects in schools. Also keep in mind that the number of courses for a minor and the number of courses required for a teachable subject may not be the same. Students must discuss their intentions with the appropriate CTEP Academic Advisor. CTEP students intending to teach in the Intermediate/Senior levels must have two teachable subjects. For those intending to teach in the Junior level of the Primary/Junior division, only one teachable is required. However, in order to ensure that students have maximum flexibility as they progress, it is strongly recommended that CTEP students develop the knowledge base for two teachable subjects in the first three years. Early Development of a Plan of Study During their first year, students are advised to review course requirements for the full five years for the single Specialist program or the two Major programs and develop a tentative plan for the courses to be taken over the five years of the CTEP B.Sc./B.A. and B.Ed. programs. In developing a plan of study, it is particularly important that students consider the prerequisite courses for each of the courses they intend to take and students should familiarize themselves with the regulations on Exclusions, Prerequisites and Corequisites which can be found in the UTSC Calendar CTEP Mandated Courses for the B.Sc./B.A. B.Sc. Students: The course work load in first year for students in a single Specialist program or two Major programs is usually so demanding that CTEP students at UTSC do not take any of the three CTEP mandated courses in their first year. Since two of the CTEP mandated courses include 20 hour practical placements, students will begin these courses in second year. B.A. Students: 3 CTEP Candidates will be integrated with the Teacher Candidates from the Consecutive B.Ed. in their Curriculum and Instruction courses in Year 5 when these particular courses are not available at UTSC. Computer Science, Dramatic Arts, Economics, English (First Language), Family Studies, French (Second Language), Geography, Health and Physical Education, History, Individual and Society, International Languages – German, International Languages – Italian, International Languages – Spanish, International Languages – Other, Mathematics, Music – Instrumental, Music – Vocal, Politics, Religious Education, Science – Biology, Science – Chemistry, Science – General, Science – Physics, Visual Arts. 5 If the Child and Adolescent Development course is offered when students are completing their first year of the program, they will be able to take the course, once granted permission by the CTEP Academic Advisor. If the course is not offered, students will take it in second year. Students will take the other two courses (Equity and Diversity in Education, Communications and Conflict Resolution) in second and third year. CTEP Portfolio All CTEP students must maintain a CTEP Portfolio for the duration of their participation in CTEP. Initially, this will be a collection of descriptions of activities associated with CTEP, reflections upon these activities and their impact. The Portfolio will evolve in a manner that reflects the evolution of the CTEP student from a first year university student to a professional teacher. Every year, the program will offer Portfolio workshops where students will learn more about the development of a professional portfolio and share aspects of their Portfolio with other CTEP students from across the University of Toronto. The development and maintenance of the Portfolio will be facilitated by the use of Blackboard, the learning management software system adopted across the University of Toronto. This will allow easy sharing of parts of the Portfolio with other CTEP students.4 Second and Subsequent Years: The courses that contribute to the B.Ed. degree as opposed to the B.Sc./B.A. degree are not taken until third year. The details are described in the CTEP Calendar entry. In fourth year, CTEP students become much more engaged in formal teaching courses for the B.Ed. These courses, which develop the student’s pedagogical practices in each of their teachable subjects, make it essential that a sufficient number of courses from the B.A./B.Sc. program have been completed to ensure the necessary subject knowledge base. For the same reason, during the fourth and fifth years students will not have as much time to spend on their B.A./B.Sc. program. It is important that students bear this in mind when planning the sequence of courses for the single Specialist program or two Majors programs. Students are strongly urged to consult with the appropriate CTEP Academic Advisor when developing the initial plan of courses and at any stage when there are changes. 4 At the beginning of the first year, students attend a Jump Start weekend where they meet other CTEP students from across the University and many of the people involved with CTEP. Among the sessions is an introduction to creating and managing a Portfolio in Blackboard. 6 Sample Timeline for Completion of CTEP Mandated Courses Credit Value B.A. /B.Sc. 20 FCE Year 1 5.0 Credits Year 2 5.0 Credits Child & Adolescent Dev. in Education (.5) Year 3 4.0 Credits Subject Studies (.5) Communication and Conflict Resolution (.5) Equity & Diversity in Education (.5) B.A, B.Sc.
