CANADIAN MUSEUM OF CIVILIZATION CORPORATION (CMCC) RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM PURPOSE : To offer senior graduate students or recent post-graduates the opportunity to undertake research projects using the National Collection at the Canadian Museum of Civilization Corporation, which is comprised of the Canadian Museum of Civilization (CMC) and the Canadian War Museum (CWM). The National Collection comprises over 5 million items including artifacts, historic archives (textual, photographic and audio-visual) and works of art. This program is being offered in order to:    Enhance the quantity and quality of museum-based scholarship in Canada; Encourage material history and material culture research using the National Collection; Expand the Corporation’s knowledge of particular facets of the National Collection, including time periods, communities, collectors and materials. Most importantly, the Program contributes to maintaining the research function of the Corporation by encouraging new ideas and expertise. APPLICANT CRITERIA: 1. Applicants must be senior graduate students or recent post-graduates with, at minimum, a Master of Arts or equivalent research degree at commencement of their fellowship. Applicants will have a superior record of original research activity and achievement, and a demonstrable ability to present research results in a variety of formats. An applicant’s skill set must be fully compatible with his/her fellowship project, which may include the ability to work in both official languages, French and English. Applicants must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada. 2. 3. 4. TERMS AND CONDITIONS: 1. Fellowship must be held for a minimum of one (1) year to a maximum of two (2) years. If the fellowship has been granted for a one (1) year term then the Fellow must re-apply if he/she wishes to do an additional one (1) year term with either the CMC or the CWM. The Research Fellow is not an employee of the CMCC and will not receive employeeapplicable benefits. Research Fellows will be required to work at either the CMC or the CWM and will need to reside in the Gatineau/Ottawa region during their fellowship. 2. 3. 4. Fellowship projects can be proposed by the applicants for the CMCC’s consideration, or assigned by the CMCC in consultation with award recipients. Fellowship proposals should include a short (one page) project description as part of the Application Form. Student applicants must provide proof of insurance coverage from their college or university. Research Fellows will adhere to standard CMCC guidelines, applicable to all CMCC research staff and emeritus appointments, pertaining to publications and authorship. A copy of these guidelines is available on request from the Human Resources Division. 5. 6. MANAGEMENT OF FELLOWSHIP AND REMUNERATION: 1. Research Fellows will be assigned to a curator or senior researcher for day-to-day supervision and management of the fellowship project. Supervisors and Research Fellows will establish clear deliverables and timelines at the beginning of the project. The first six (6) months of a Research Fellowship will be considered a probationary period, subject to a formal review by the CMCC, on advice of the assigned supervisor. The annual stipend will be between $28,000 and $30,000. The stipend will be paid out in four (4) equal installments. The program also includes the use of facilities, equipment and office supplies (to a maximum of $100.). 2. 3. 4. SELECTION CRITERIA AND PROCESS: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. TARGETED AREAS OF RESEARCH: The National Collection comprises over 5 million items including artifacts, historic archives (textual, photographic and audio-visual) and works of art. For the Canadian Museum of Civilization (CMC): Collections at the CMC document the fields of Canadian archaeology, history, ethnology, cultural studies and postal history. For the Canadian War Museum (CWM) Collections at the CWM cover the military history of Canada (all periods). Other areas of targeted research may be added by the Corporation.
