Assessment Program for International Medical Graduates Basic Admission Requirements The candidate must: 1. Hold an M.D. or equivalent degree in medicine, based on successful completion of a conventional undergraduate program of education in allopathic medicine that; teaches medical principles, knowledge and skills similar to those taught in undergraduate programs of medical education at an LMCE/CACMS accredited medical school, includes at least 130 weeks of instruction over a minimum of 36 months, and was, at the time of the applicant’s graduation, listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools published by the World Health Organization. 2. Have been in recent practice or clinical training as a physician in the area of primary specialty certification. Note: 2.1 Recency is defined as 12 months of practice/training within the past 3 years. 2.2 Any clinical training that is being counted toward recency, must be registered with a University. 3. Be recognized as a medical specialist (the term “specialist” includes the specialty of Family Medicine) by an organization outside of North America that recognizes medical specialists. Note: A “specialist” in family medicine must have a) postgraduate medical education in a Family Medicine training program, or b) two years of broad-based postgraduate training plus tree years of broad-based clinical family practice. Preference will be given to candidates with postgraduate medical education in a Family Medicine training program. Candidates are not eligible if they do not meet the requirements of either a) or b). 4. Have three letters of references including one from an individual with a formal academic position who was responsible for the candidate’s postgraduate education. The Academic Referee should be equivalent to a Canadian Postgraduate Program Director or supervisor. References must be submitted by the referee, in English, or with notarized English translation, directly to the APIMG. Have demonstrated fluency in English, which is established if the applicant: 5.1 obtained a score of 50 on the Test of Spoken English and a score of 237 on the Test of English as a Foreign Language of the Educational Testing Service; or 5.2 underwent both primary and secondary education in English; or 5.3 obtained a degree in medicine from a medical school where the language of instruction, including the language used in patient care was English, or 5. 1 5.4 holds continuously, for the four years immediately preceding application, a senior teaching appointment at an accredited LCME/CACMS medical school in which the language of instruction, including the language used in patient care, is English. 6. Submit proof with your application that you intend to complete the Medical Council of Canada Evaluating Examination (MCCEE). The following will be considered acceptable: 1. 2. Letter from the Medical Council of Canada verifying your registration or your cancelled cheque. Results of the MCCEE It is the expectation of the program that individuals who are accepted into the Assessment Program will complete MCCEE by the completion of the assessment. It is the expectation of the program that individuals who are accepted into the Assessment Program will complete the MCCQE Part I before beginning the Return-of-Service commitment. Successful completion of the Medical Council of Canada examinations prior to application is encouraged, but not required. Note: A candidate applying to Family Medicine must have successfully completed the Medical Council of Canada Evaluating Examination (MCCEE), and provide the APIMG office with a copy of the results prior to the deadline for applications. 7. Submit $50 Application Fee. The APIMG Office will assess each application to assure that each applicant meets the basic admission requirements, including any discipline specific requirements. Candidates meeting these requirements will be forwarded for further review by the Discipline Specific Committee (DSC). Meeting the basic admission requirements is only the first step and does not entitle the candidate to admission to the program. Specialists who are graduates of training systems or programs which have been approved by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or the College of Family Physicians of Canada are not eligible for the APIMG program. These individuals, however, may apply directly to the RCPCS or CFPC for information about alternative access to the certification examinations.
