AUSTRIA : Passau To Vienna along the Donau/Danube Cycle Path
Independent tour - 8 days / 7 nights – approx. 319 km – longer & shorter
options available

The classical bicycle path along the Donau
from Passau to Vienna is one of the most
beautiful routes in Europe with imposing river
landscapes and water meadows. Along its way
are: the Schlögener Schlinge; the Linzer Becken
(basin) or the Machland; the Strudengau; the
historical Nibelungengau and finally the
Wachau – the wine-growing region at the
Donau. Starting-point is Schärding or Passau.
Have you ever listened to a concert performed
on the biggest church organ of the world in Passau?
In Aschach you will catch sight of the ruins of old castles and see the oldest city in the
country – Enns. The Donau bicycle path takes you through four Austrian regions:
Mühlviertel, Mostviertel, Waldviertel and Weinviertel. There are still many Vierkant-
Bauernhöfe (squared farms), situated in a slightly hilly landscape. Try the dumpling
specialities and the famous new wine (a must!). Visiting one of the Buschenschenken
in the Wachau is recommended.

This route is a great cycling holiday for the whole family

Tour itinerary - CLASSIC
1st day: Arrival in Passau
2nd day
Passau – Schlıgener / Upper Donau Valley approx. 44 km.
Commence cycling along the Inn to the Dreiflüssestadt
(City of three rivers) Passau. Sightsee round the city and
the cathedral, as well as a concert on the biggest
church organ in the world. Meander along the granite
massifs of the Mühlviertel and the Sauwald to the area
of the Schlögener Donauschlinge.
3rd day: Schlıgener – Linz Surroundings approx. 53 km
The fascinating Donauschlinge between Schlögen and Aschach is dotted with the
ruins of old castles high above the Donau valley. Among the most interesting is the
Stift Wilhering (monastery). In the evening take a stroll through the old town of Linz,
which is the capital of Upper Austria.
4th day: Linz – Grein / Surroundings approx. 60 km
Cycle via Enns, the oldest city of Austria, across the AuLandschaft (meadow
landscape) of the Machland, to the beginning of the Strudengau and then to
Wallsee, Ardagger and finally to Grein. There, the city theatre, the Grein castle and
the museum of shipping are recommended places of interest.
5th day: Grein - Melk approx. 51 km
Passing through the Strudengau, you arrive at Ybbs, former trading centre on the
Danube. From the mighty rocks above the river, the imposing Stift Melk (Benedictine
Monastery) looks down.

6th day: Melk - Krems / Traismauer approx 40/55 km
Another highlight of this cycle is the beautiful landscape of Wachau. During your
travel to Krems, you cycle through the attractive wine places of Spitz, Weissenkirchen
and Dőrnstein. Along the way see cosy Taverns, where you can enjoy the Austrian
hospitality.
7th day: Krems / Traismauer - Vienna approx. 39km / 87 km
The stretch from Krems to Vienna is the longest of the whole tour. We therefore
recommend biking till Tulln and taking the train from Tulln into Vienna. Trains depart
every 30 minutes and you can take the bike on the train. Journey time is 40 mins.
Enjoy the last ride along the Danube shoreline from Krems in this unique cultural
landscape of this UNESCO World Heritage region. In Tulln you can either start your last
cycling leg or take the train into Vienna. The highest levels of the Wienerwald forest
closely follow the course of the Donau. And you pass the castle of Greifenstein. There
is a short final stage to Vienna. If you have time, visit the Klosterneuburg Monastery.

8th day: Vienna Arrangements terminate after breakfast . Try to visit the famous
“Naschmarkt” and the beautiful castle of Schınbrunn.
