"SMART Interactive Whiteboard Setup"
SET UP THE SMARTBOARD When first setting up the SMARTBoard, follow the direction sequence shown in the accompanying diagram. These instructions tell how to set up the SMARTBoard with a ‘new’ MPF Windows XP computer and a video (LCD) projector. Installing SMART software: 1. SMART Notebook and SMART Tools should be installed on any computer which will be used with the SMARTBoard. Someone with Administrator rights must install it. This should be done BEFORE connecting the SMARTBoard or the projector to the computer (Step 6 in the diagram). Preparation for use of the SMARTBoard: 1. All elementary schools now have at least one mobile powered utility cart, projector, and laptop dedicated to the SMARTBoard, loaded with SMART Notebook and SMART Ideas software. The laptop carts will give you much more flexibility in positioning the SMARTBoard than if you connect it to your desktop computer. 2. The projector should already be connected to the laptop, and the power cords to both the laptop and projector should already be plugged into the utility cart power receptacle. A long Internet cable should also be connected to the laptop. The serial end of the SMARTBoard cable should be attached underneath the corner of the SMARTBoard as shown in the diagram (7) and the rest of the cable should be attached (or put in a tote bag attached ) to the back of the SMARTBoard. THESE CONNECTIONS SHOULD NOT BE REMOVED, if at all possible. 3. Check with your Library Media Specialist or tech person and reserve a SMARTBoard and cart in advance if necessary. If you plan on using the Internet with the SMARTBoard, the computer you’re using must also be connected to an Internet port. The SMARTBoard must be visible to all students, and the projector must be facing the SMARTBoard. To set up: 1. If the computer is on, Shut it Down. 2. Attach the other end (USB) of the SMARTBoard cable to a USB port in the laptop. There are usually multiple USB ports; any of them will do and the cable will only fit one way into the port. 3. Attach the power cord from the cart to the closest wall receptacle. 4. Turn on the laptop. 5. Remove the lens cover from the projector if it is on. Some projectors have a toggle power switch on the side of the projector that must be flipped to the ON position before turning on the power. Press the projector power button on top to turn on. 6. You should see a blue screen and then the image on the computer screen should also show on the SMARTBoard screen. (With some Dell laptops, you may not have an image on your computer monitor while it’s connected to the projector because the SMARTBoard screen has taken the place of your computer screen). Your computer keyboard and mouse can still be used as usual, or you can use a remote mouse. TIP: if you don’t get an image on either screen, press and hold the Fn (Function) key on the laptop keyboard, then press one of the numbered F keys at the top of your keyboard. Look for the one that Instructional Technology 2 HowTo Carol Almarez SMARTBoard Setup Spring 06 has a computer screen icon or the letters CRT with it. Press both keys for a couple of seconds then let go. 7. Move the ring around the lens of the projector until the screen image is as large as possible. Adjust the distance between the projector and the SMARTBoard until the image just fills the screen (move both the cart and the SMARTBoard around, if necessary. Adjust the projector focus. When you have the image in place, lock down the 4 wheels of the SMARTBoard by pressing the toggle switch toward the floor. 8. Open SMART Notebook and SMART Tools by double-clicking the icons on the screen. Minimize them to the task bar. 9. The SMARTBoard must be ‘oriented’ or calibrated to match the computer it’s being used with. The easiest way to orient is to push both (black) buttons on the SMARTBoard tray (the keyboard and mouse buttons) at the same time. You can also Orient from the menu. 10. You will see the SMARTBoard screen change: a red X will be blinking at the upper left. To orient the board, press each red X in the order they appear. If the board or the projector are knocked out of orientation, repeat this process. 11. Your SMARTBoard is ready to use. When finished: 1. Press the projector power button (on top) to begin cooling off the machine. IMPORTANT: DO NOT TURN OFF THE POWER TO THE CART OR TO THE PROJECTOR UNTIL THE POWER LIGHT STOPS BLINKING, OR THE FAN STOPS. Otherwise, you may damage a very expensive bulb. 2. Disconnect the SMARTBoard cable from the computer you were using and hang the cable from the back of the SMARTBoard. 3. Unlock the SMARTBoard wheels, unless you’re using it again Instructional Technology 3 HowTo Carol Almarez SMARTBoard Setup Spring 06 in the same place. 4. When the projector fan stops running or the light stops blinking (varies with projectors), turn off the power (and the toggle switch on the side for some projectors).
