The BN/RN Degree Program at UNB The BN/RN is an academic degree program for registered nurses, which may be completed on a full or part-time basis. The time limit for completing the program begins with the first Nursing course and ends after six (6) years for full-time students and after eight (8) years for part-time students. Please note that these time limits apply only after students have begun to take Nursing courses. Students are strongly encouraged to register in the program prior to taking any university courses. This will ensure that they are informed of course offerings, acceptability of courses taken at other universities, and news about the program. Admission to the program does NOT start your clock ticking. To recognize the value of previous nursing education and experience, the degree program for RNs consists of 57 credit hours, compared to the 138 credit hour program for the basic Nursing degree at UNB. The BN/RN program is available on the Fredericton campus and also via distance education to nurses throughout New Brunswick and in Toronto. Acceptance into the BN/RN Program is a pre-requisite to being admitted to the first UNB Nursing course. All Nursing courses have limited enrolments and students are encouraged to register early. pre-requisites to nursing courses in the program. Availability of Courses All core nursing courses are available each year on the UNB Fredericton campus. One or more nursing courses are usually offered during the May/June Intersession. Selected courses are only available on a part-time basis in specified areas of the province each year (consult the BN/RN program office and/or the College of Extended Learning Calendar). Full-time study is not available at distance sites. Scheduling for off-campus courses is arranged for groups of students in the different regions of the province. Availability of nursing courses is dependent upon the number of students, adequacy of resources and availability of qualified instructors. Taking Courses from Other Universities for Credit Toward a BN/RN Degree at UNB While all nursing courses are available throughout the province in a planned sequence, it can sometimes be difficult to deliver a broad range of non-nursing courses. Students are therefore encouraged to explore courses available from other universities (such as Mount Allison, Athabasca, or Acadia) which might be taken for credit towards the BN/RN degree at UNB. 1. Successful completion of an approved diploma program in Nursing. 2. A minimum of 1750 hours of nursing practice for fulltime applicants and 1000 hours of nursing practice for part-time applicants. 3. Eligibility for registration with the Nurses Association of New Brunswick or province where you will study (eg. ON). Active registration is required for all Nursing Practice courses. N.B.: All documentation must be complete before being considered for acceptance (see Admission Procedure section in this brochure). Deadline Dates Deadline for application and acceptance into the BN/RN program as a full time student is June 1st. Part-time students are encouraged to apply at any time throughout the year, but it is advisable to plan to complete applications three months before starting to take nursing courses.
A listing of distance education courses available from Atlantic Canadian Universities is prepared every year.
University Regulations Affecting BN/RN Students Students are responsible for familiarizing themselves with relevant sections of the current UNB Calendar, particularly General University Regulations and Information, Regulations regarding Nursing degree programs, International students and mature students. Regulations regarding student attendance at all classes, labs, or other class meetings designated for a particular are to be respected. Students are expected to complete all course assignments. These assignments collectively are referred to as term or class work. Departments, or individual instructors may make specific requirements about attendance and class participation. An instructor, therefore may assign a final grade of "F" in the course to a student who fails to meet any one of the requirements. Such requirements must be made known to students within the first two weeks of the course. It is the responsibility of students who are absent during the first two weeks to ascertain course requirements. It is expected that most problems caused by a student's absence from classes can be resolved with instructors. If through sickness or other unavoidable cause, a student is absent from classes, the student must advise the instructor upon return to classes and supply suitable documentation if it is requested. University calendars are available from the Registrar's office at UNB and through your regional library as well as from Community Liaison Representatives.
