TIGERS TIGERS HISTORY
The LSU swimming and diving program enters its 37th men's season and 26th women's season. From 12 Olympians to one SEC Championship, the Tiger program is one that has taken shape over the years, producing great athletes who graduate and move on to exciting futures. The future is now as promising head coach Adam Schmitt enters his first season at LSU. Schmitt's championship background combined with the experience and energetic coaching squad he has assembled lay the groundwork for a program that is surely on the rise. A new foundation, a new attitude, this is LSU swimming and diving.
Adam Schmitt became the seventh women's head coach and eighth men's head coach in the school's history on June 22, 2004. Schmitt took over the ranks left by the departing Jeff Cavana, who finished his four-year tenure last spring. Schmitt was a member of the only SEC Championship squad in 1988. As a sprinter, Schmitt won the 50 freestyle three times during his career and still holds the school record for the 100 freestyle with a time of 43.22. Schmitt swam under the direction of former head coach Sam Freas. Freas, who served a three-year tenure from 1985 to 1988, still owns the highest winning percentage in school history. He guided the men's team to a 28-6 (.824) career record and captured one SEC Championship and the school's highest NCAA finish, sixth in 1988. He also helped lead the women's squad to a 31-8 (.795) career record. During the 1986-87 season, Freas led the women's team the only perfect record in school history when the Lady Tigers finished the season with a 10-0 record. The LSU program has featured 12 Olympians in its history. Most recently, sprinter Mandy Leach represented the country of Zimbabwe in the 2000 Summer Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia. Leach qualified and finished 13th in the finals of the 200 freestyle against the world's best. Sion Brinn, a lettermen from 1994-95, also competed in the 2000 Olympics for Great Britain. Brinn is one of six former LSU athletes who have competed in Olympic competition more than once. Samantha Purvis served for Great Britain as well, making appearances in 1984, 1988 and 1992. This past year, Stephanie Smith, who completed her eligibility this past spring, nearly qualified for the 2004 Olympics Games in Athens, along with former Tiger Jarrod Marrs. LSU has six NCAA champions to its credit, including four divers. All-American divers Ashley Culpepper and Jamie Watkins won the 3meter and 1-meter, respectively in 2000 at the NCAA Championships. They became the first NCAA title holders at LSU in six years. Both Alison Maisch and Susie Ryan have NCAA titles to their credit as well. Todd Torres and Mark Andrews are the only two swimmers in school history to win at the NCAA Championships. Both teammates of head coach Adam Schmitt, Torres won the 100 breaststroke title in 1987 and Andrews was victorious in the 50 freestyle in 1988.

excited about the honor to return home to my alma mater and coach the very team I competed for.”

SEC Swimming/Season Review Notebook
WHAT'S THE BEST WAY TO JUDGE WHICH CONFERENCE IS THE
The Best in the Nation: Southeastern Conference Swimming and Diving 2004 was once again a record-breaking year for the Southeastern Conference. Auburn swept both the men's and women's titles for the second consecutive season and four other schools posted top-five finishes at the men's and women's NCAA Championships. Georgia and Florida registered top-five rankings, while record-breaking times fell at the national championships. As the sport of swimming and diving continues to grow, it is clear the nations' best reside in the SEC. This past August, several SEC swimmers participated at the Summer Olympic Games in Athens, Greece. Auburn's George Bovell and Kirsty Coventry took home Olympic medals. Tigers Finish 21st, Lady Tigers 24th at NCAAs The men's team left the Nassau Aquatics Center in East Meadow, N.Y. with a 21st-place showing, earning the school's 11th top-25 finish out of the past 12 seasons. The Tigers scored 37 points during the three-day event, while Auburn defended its national championship with a record 634 points. The women's team wrapped up the NCAA Championships as the No. 24 team in the nation with 29.5 points. Auburn also captured the women's title, tallying 569 points. Smith Closes Out Career, Qualifies for U.S. Olympic Trials Senior Stephanie Smith was one of two former Tigers who qualified to compete at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Long Beach, Calif. Smith, a native of Metairie, competed for the Bengal Tiger Aquatic Club in the 400-meter freestyle. She was joined by former Tiger Jarrod Marrs at the event. Marrs swam in both breaststroke events and just missed qualifying for the finals of each event. In March, Smith officially closed out her career at the NCAA Championships. She took 49th in the 400meter free and was the Lady Tigers' lone swimmer at NCAAs. Smith leaves as an All-American in the 1650 free and currently holds three school records, all in distance freestyle events. Martinec Closes Out Career With Three More All-America Honors Senior Evan Martinec ended his career in appropriate fashion, earning three more All-America honors at the NCAA Championships. Martinec placed fourth in the 100 backstroke for his fourth All-America honor in that event, which was every year of his career. He later helped the Tigers earn All-America honors in the 200 and 400 medley relay. His three accolades left him as the third most decorated swimmer in school history with nine All-American honors, two behind Todd Torres' 11 and head coach Adam Schmitt's 10.
Wantz Spectacular at NCAA Championships for Second Straight Year Despite being sidelined by an injury for most of the dual-meet season, Jessica Wantz did not disappoint at the NCAA Championships, recording the second and third All-America accolades of her career. Wantz, a native of Houston,Texas, scored the best mark of her career in the 3-meter to place third (540.15). On the first day of competition, Wantz finished fifth in the 1meter and was named All-American with a score of 288.60. Martinec's Four School Records Highlight SEC Championships Evan Martinec closed the book on a remarkable career by shattering four school records at the SEC Championships, and in the process became the first SEC champion in school history since Jarrod Marrs in 1998. Martinec, a native of Tacoma, Wash., won the 100 backstroke with an SEC record time of 46.23. He became the first 100 back champion in school history since Neil Harper won the race in 1986. On day three of the event, Martinec broke two more school records in the 200 back (1:44.36) and 200 medley relay (1:27.35). Joining Martinec in the 200 medley relay were Christian Clausen, Neil Lowe and Ross Hebert. On the final day of competition, Martinec, Clausen, Lowe and Chris Stanczyk shattered the 400 medley relay school, finishing second behind national champion Auburn (3:12.35). The Tigers would finish seventh, accumulating 242 final points with 49 of them coming from impressive swims by Martinec. Lady Tigers Finish Ninth at SEC Championships The LSU women's swimming and diving team took ninth place with 212 points at the SEC Championships held at Georgia's Gabrielsen Natatorium. Stephanie Smith delivered impressive swims in the distance freestyle events and swam a season-best time of 4:49.49 in the 500 free to place ninth with an NCAA "B" cut time. Jessica Wantz was LSU's highest finisher in diving, placing fifth in the 3-meter (471.45) and sixth in the 1-meter (268.35). Martinec Named SEC Swimmer of the Week on Jan. 27 Evan Martinec was named the Southeastern Conference Men's Swimmer of the Week on Tuesday, Jan. 27. It was the second time of his career he had earned the honor. The senior won all three events her swam in against 14th-ranked Texas A&M, capturing the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke. He also teamed up with Christian Clausen, Neil Lowe and Ross Hebert to win the 200 medley relay. Martinec's time of 48.07 in the 100 back was an LSU Natatorium record. All three victories were not even challenged.

he LSU Natatorium is one of the finest swimming and diving facilities in the country. The Natatorium, which was completed in the summer of 1985, has hosted the 1985 National Sports Festival, the 1986 Men's Southeastern Conference Championships, the NCAA Diving Regionals and the U.S. Diving Nationals in the spring of 1987. The Natatorium also played host to the Regional Diving Championships in March of 1999. The Natatorium features a 50-meter pool, which can be converted into two 25-meter or 25-yard pools with the use of bulkheads. The facility houses a new championship diving well that was completely renovated in the summer of 2003 and features one and three-meter springboards, and five, seven and ten-meter platforms. In addition, the Natatorium also

contains fully computerized scoring and timing systems. The three-million dollar facility is located immediately north of the LSU Field House and can accommodate 2,200 spectators. The Natatorium serves as the exclusive training and event site for the LSU varsity squad. In September of 1998, new state-of-the-art locker rooms were completed. The locker rooms feature varsity lockers for both the men and women squads, and also accommodate public showers and lockers. The impeccable $560,000 facility allows LSU to host national competitions, as well as Southeastern Conference Championships. New seating along the championship end of the pool has been added and will accommodate large crowds for dual-meet and championship competitions.
