My experience, as a Cobb County prosecutor with the District Attorney’s and
Solicitor General’s Offices has provided me with the...
EXPERIENCE, UNDERSTANDING and COMPASSION
to bring to the bench in the State Court.
It also showed me the need to address the
“AT RISK” kids in Cobb County by founding an
organization (S.M.A.R.T. Counseling, L.L.C -
Substance Misuse and Responsiblity Training)
to address the issues of ALCOHOL and
DRUG ABUSE in young people ages 17 to 21.
I have been very fortunate in my law career and
have been sworn in to practice law in courts, at
many levels, including the STATE OF GEORGIA
SUPREME COURT and the SUPREME COURT
OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.

PuBLiSHER’S NOTE
Fifteen years ago, on Saturday,
November 18, 1995, East Cobb
residents celebrated the first annual
EAST COBBER Parade & Festival. This
was an historic event for East Cobb
residents: a community-wide parade that
shut down Johnson Ferry Road on both
sides! That first parade had 52 groups
and 1,000 people marching from Johnson
Ferry Baptist church northward along
Johnson Ferry to Merchants Walk shopping
center. This year’s EAST COBBER Parade
will showcase 110 groups (and counting,
still!) and 2,000 participants. The first annual EAST COBBER Festival
featured 40 vendors. Compare that number to the 80+ vendors that will be

Americans of all persuasions, all religious beliefs and ethnic backgrounds can
come together in peace and harmony, showing the best this community and

s FOCuS swimmer Katie Norris
Co-founded by Jennifer Henry of Woodstock, a physical
therapist, The Adaptive Swim Club is only one of the many
programs offered by the non-profit organization, Families of
Children Under Stress (FOCUS). Established in 1983, FOCUS
now serves over 2,500 families in the metro Atlanta area with
a mission to offer “emotional, informational, and physical sup-
port to families with children with disabilities or ongoing medi-
cal needs.”
Serving children affected by everything from spina bifida
and cerebral palsy to autism, The Adaptive Swim Club offers
a chance for these kids to achieve something for themselves,
make friends, and be part of a team. “It gives children with
special needs an opportunity to feel like a typical child,” says
East Cobb resident Angie Weiland, Parent Support Coordinator.
With a 1 to 4 coach/athlete ratio, Jennifer says the big-
gest difference between The FOCUS Adaptive Swim Club and a
non-adaptive swim team is the individual attention each child
receives. Participants range from age 5 to 18, and are broken
up according to age and ability level. Each practice begins

East Cobb Kids Raise Money For Heifer international
in Honor of Grandma
By Kirstin Baillie
Claire (age 7), along with her brother Colin (age 10),
decided that they would still hold a fundraiser, but now
donate the money to their grandma’s favorite charity, Heifer
International. Thus the “Grandma’s Charity Sale” was born.
With the help of their East Cobb cousins, Joshua (age 6)
and Kara (age 4) MacKay, the kids made signs, collected gently
used items from home, gathered items from neighbors, handed
out flyers, sent emails, and then set up and managed a garage
sale and lemonade stand on July 30, 2010.
Through the generosity of friends, neighbors and garage
sale shoppers, Claire, Colin, Joshua, and Kara collected $975
in total! By surveying those who attended the sale to tally the
most popular Heifer gift animals, the grandchildren donated the
money to Heifer International, giving the gift of one cow, one

this year to include the entire East Cobb community to really
build a day-long event - the new East Cobb Day,” said Tom

building on one of Cobb County’s longest running community
traditions – the Walton Raider Chase - to create an even bet-
