THE AHS BEST-IN-SHOW TABULATION PROGRAM
This Program was revised in January 2009 to conform to the latest changes in AHS Show Sections.
Dr. Robert O. Stanton, Professor of Mathematics and Computer Science at St. John's University, and an AHS Senior Exhibition Judge, developed this program for computers using Microsoft Windows® software. If at all possible, this program should be used to tabulate and determine the Best-in-Show cultivar at AHS accredited shows. Using the “Best-in-Show Tabulation Program” instead of the “Best-in-Show Tabulation Form,” the tedious, time consuming, and error prone process of tabulating by hand will be eliminated. If judges' Best-in-Show Ballot scores are entered into the program as they are received, the Best-in-Show cultivar can be determined within seconds of entering the final set of scores. Please note that the program will not accept incorrectly entered judges’ scores from a Best-in-Show ballot form. The program has been tested extensively and thoroughly for accuracy. The print-out or electronic file of the tabulation report from this program will be accepted by the AHS Exhibitions chair as a part of the official, final show report. The 2009 updated “AHS Best-in-Show Tabulation Program” is posted on the AHS web pages http://www.daylilies.org (select “Daylily Shows & Materials”). The small program and can be downloaded to a laptop, desktop computer, or a CD and run off-line before and during the show. A printer is not necessary as the Best-in-Show Tabulation Report can be “saved” and printed at a later date at home, or it can be sent to the Exhibitions chair as an electronic file. In his article, Dr. Stanton explains the procedures for using the tabulation program and shows examples of the various screens. Instructions for downloading and running the program are printed on the other side of this page.
Do familiarize yourself with the program beforehand and don’t wait until the day of the show.

Downloading the software, storing it on a laptop, a desktop computer, or on a CD:
• • Follow the AHS web-page instructions by clicking on “Click Here to download.” After the software is downloaded, select the Save to file option from the pop-up screen and save the “AHSBestInShowVersion2_20.exe” file to a folder on your desktop or in your show folder.
To run the software from its file on your computer:
• • Open the folder, double-click on the filename “AHSBestInShowVersion2_20.exe” and in the pop-up screen, click on “run” the program. The opening screen requires that you enter the number of “flowers open” on the best-in-section scape in each horticulture division section. The program may use that number of open flowers/scape as a “tie breaker” criterion if needed For a further “tie breaker,” the program will automatically take each judge’s lowest scores for each Best-in-Show candidate into consideration and in its calculation of the winner.
Saving and/or Printing the Results of the “AHS Best-in-Show Tabulation Program”:
After the program has calculated the results and has determined the best-in-show winner, you should save the results. That way, you can send the electronic file as an e-mail attachment to the exhibitions chair or you can print the results out at home. (1) • • • • • • • Saving as a spreadsheet file (Excel): With the SUMMARY OF RESULTS still open on your computer, Click on “Prepare for CSV Report” button. Make sure you select the folder/location in the “Save in” (white rectangle at top of pop-up screen). Key in the filename and click on save. Make sure the “Save as Type” below the filename says “Comma Separated Variable Files (*csv). The file will be saved with the 3-letter filename extension .csv (use “View, Details” when you search for the file names in a folder). Click on SAVE button. When pop-up screen asks you if you want to save it with .csv extension, click OK. The file will open in MS/Excel Spreadsheet program from which you can print it. Or, you can send the csv file to the Exhibitions chair.
(2) Saving as an *.ahs file that you can later open and print from the running Tabulation Program later at home where you have a printer available: • Click on SAVE REPORT button. • Make sure you select the folder/location in the “Save in” (white rectangle at top of pop-up screen). • Key in the filename and click on save. • Make sure the “Save as Type” below the filename says “AHS files” (*ahs). The file will be saved with the 3-letter filename extension .ahs (use “View, Details” when you search for the file names in a folder. • Click on SAVE button. When pop-up screen asks you if you want to save file with .ahs extension, click OK. (3) • • • • • Saving as a *.txt file so you can later print the file at home where you have a printer available: Click on PREPARE TO VIEW REPORT button. Make sure you select the folder/location in the “Save in” (white rectangle at top of pop-up screen). Key in the filename and click on save. Make sure the “Save as Type” below the filename says “AHS files” (*txt). Click on SAVE button. When pop-up screen asks you if you want to save the file as a .txt file, click OK. The file will be saved with the 3-letter filename extension .txt (use “View, Details” when you search for the file names in a folder. If the file opens in a strange program, close the file, and and open it from your Programs/Accessories/ “Notepad” or “Wordpad” program.
