Reading a Ruler: A Review
In Microsoft Word, you will find a ruler toward the top of the document window. The
ruler will help you determine various settings. To set the first line indent, move the top
arrow over to the desired measurement setting on the ruler. The bottom arrow is used to
set hanging indents, such as those found in bibliography entries. The standard indent for
a paragraph is 5 character spaces. If you set the first line indent to ¼ of an inch ( 2 /8 of an
inch), your paragraph should resemble this example (see *image for the indent setting).
The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog because the fox had no other
alternative. The dog simply refused to move.
