THE FREDERICTON HERITAGE ICONS PROGRAM

Reviews
THE FREDERICTON HERITAGE ICONS PROGRAM Background In 2002 The National Trust of South Australia began an annual Heritage Icons List to recognize and protect items "that have made a significant contribution to South Australia's cultural identity." The concept of a heritage or cultural icons list has been adopted by the Heritage Trusts of most Australian States. The idea is beginning to spread beyond Australia. It is believed that Fredericton Heritage Trust's initiative is the first formal Heritage Icons Program in Canada. Description The Fredericton Heritage Icons Program is designed to recognize significant aspects of our history or contributions to our cultural identity that have won a lasting place in our minds and memories. Objectives The program recognizes significant aspects of our social, economic, cultural and natural heritage as Fredericton Heritage Icons. Such recognition of these items as icons will promote a broader awareness of our heritage and an understanding of our cultural identity. Such increased awareness, it is hoped, will encourage the protection of the icons. Process Potential icons are identified through a process of public nomination (see the Guidelines), followed by a selection process by a panel of three members of Fredericton Heritage Trust.. Four to six icons will be selected annually and added to The Fredericton Heritage Icons List. The selected icons will be announced and the accompanying framed citation or description will be unveiled at a public reception. The icons will be displayed at various public locations throughout the city following the announcement, after which they will be on display in a yet to be determined permanent location. Timing The nomination process is open throughout the year. Nominations received after the "nomination close" date of April 15, 2007 will automatically be considered in the following year's selection process. The selected icons will be announced before the end of May 2007. GUIDELINES for the Fredericton Heritage Icons Program Items nominated by the public for inclusion in The Fredericton Heritage Icons List should be or represent an important part of our history or have contributed in a significant way to the heritage of the Fredericton area. They will have won a lasting place in our minds and memories. The items nominated may relate to our social, economic, cultural and natural heritage, including flora, fauna, objects, places or traditions. They would not normally include individuals or buildings, who or which may be recognized in other ways. (An element or part of a building maybe considered where it possesses a noteworthy feature or is symbolic of an aspect of our heritage capable of being recognized separately from the structure itself.) Nominations can be submitted by any member of the public (excluding Fredericton Heritage Trust Board members); there is no residency, membership, age or other requirements. A nominator is required only to provide as much information as possible requested on the official nomination form. That form must be used in order for the nomination to be considered by the selection panel. There is no public recognition or release of the name of the nominator(s). Nominations maybe submitted electronically or by mail using the form available. http://www.heritagefredericton.org/documents/Icons_Nomination.doc
