FREE Awareness Week Teleclass Program- Speaker Bios Sheryl Jones, MD September 18, 2006 7:00 PM ET “AD/HD Basics” Dr. Sheryl Jones is a native of Memphis. She practices Adult, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry in the Memphis, Tennessee area. She is Board Certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in Adult, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. She attended Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois where she obtained a B.A. in Psychology. She completed medical school in Nashville, Tennessee at Meharry Medical College. She went on to complete Adult as well as Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Residency Programs at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. Her practice is focused primarily on the treatment of mental health issues in children, including ADHD, mood disorders, psychotic disorders and disruptive behavior disorders. She is involved in numerous civic and professional organizations. Her commitment to bettering the lives of citizens in the Mid South has led to the development of programs targeted specifically at reducing morbidity and improving the quality of life for children and families in the area. She is actively involved in numerous speaking, mentoring and educational activities. Dr. Wendy Richardson September 18, 2006 9:00 PM ET “AD/HD – Substance and Behavioral Addictions” Wendy is a Licensed Marriage, Family Therapist and Certified Addictions Specialist who has been working in the mental health field for 30 years. She is nationally recognized as an expert on AD/HD and co-occurring substance use disorders, eating disorders, behavioral addictions, and criminal behavior. Wendy provides trainings for criminal justice personnel, teaches graduate level courses, and trains professionals on AD/HD in America and abroad. She is the author of several books: The Link Between ADD and Addiction: Getting the Help You Deserve, and When Too Much Isn't Enough: Ending the Destructive Cycle of AD/HD and Addictive Behavior. Wendy is available for phone consults, as well as regular coaching. Dr. William Bailey Jones III, M.D. September 19, 2006 7:00 PM ET “AD/HD and the African American Community” Dr. William Bailey Jones, III was born and raised in Springfield, Massachusetts. His undergraduate studies were at Brown University and Lincoln University, Pennsylvania. He earned his medical degree at Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee. He completed his internship in emergency medicine at Howard University Hospital, and his psychiatric residency with the New York Medical College, New York City. Jones practiced in the Baltimore-Washington area for ten years and held a faculty appointment at John Hopkins University. He previously served as medical director of St. John’s Anderson Center, one of the largest psychiatric facilities in the state, before becoming executive director of the Indiana Neuropsychiatric Institute in Indianapolis, Ind. Jones is widely recognized for his expertise in neuropsychiatry, specifically those psychiatric disorders caused by a chemical imbalance of the brain. In addition to his responsibilities at the Center, he lectures extensively to the community and other physicians. While accepting all patients desiring help, Jones has a special concern for the mental wellness of the African-American community. Jones is an accomplished musician and alpine skier. He has three sons, David, Alexander, and William IV. He considers his Christian faith the center of his existence. Chris Dendy M.S. September 19, 2006 9:00 PM ET “Executive Function and Impact on School Work” Chris A. Zeigler Dendy, M.S. is an author, former educator, school psychologist and children’s mental health professional with over 40 years experience. She is also the mother of two grown sons and a daughter who have ADHD. Her highly acclaimed books include: Teenagers with ADD and ADHD, 2nd edition (88,000+), Teaching Teens with ADD and ADHD, and A Bird’s-Eye View of Life with ADD and ADHD, a teen survival guide she coauthored with her son Alex. They have also produced two videos: Teen to Teen: the ADD Experience and Father to Father. In addition, she was the lead author and editor for the new CHADD Educator’s Manual (2006). She presents nationally and internationally on ADHD, LD, and Executive Function. She served on the national CHADD Board from 2001-2005. Ms. Dendy has also served on ADDA-SR’s Advisory Board. Presently she and her husband are members of CHADD’s President’s Council. She has also chaired her local mental heath board, plus was cofounder and clinical advisor for Gwinnett GA CHADD. Thomas W. Phelan, Ph.D. September 20, 2006 12:00 NN ET “AD/HD and Family Stress” A registered clinical psychologist, Thomas W. Phelan, Ph.D. has worked with children, adults and families for over 30 years. He is a member of the American Psychological Association and the Illinois Psychological Association. His articles appear in numerous regional and national publications. Dr. Phelan received his Doctorate from Loyola University, Chicago, in 1970 after completing his internship at the Loyola Child Guidance Center. He worked at the DuPage County Mental Health Center until 1972 and then entered private practice. The father of an ADD child, he has also served on the boards of directors for both ADDA and CHADD, two national organizations for the parents of children with ADD. He was inducted into the CHADD Hall of Fame in 1997. Dr. Phelan and his wife of 35 years raised two children and experienced first-hand many of the problems he now helps parents tackle. “My goal is to help parents avoid some of the turmoil we experienced, and which I hear about from other parents every day,” comments Phelan. “With some basic understanding of what makes children and teenagers tick—and a ton of patience— parenthood can provide some of life’s greatest satisfactions.” Wilma Fellman September 20, 2006 3:00 PM ET “Workplace Issues” Wilma Fellman, a Career Counselor for 23 years, specializing in AD/HD, is the author of: The Other me, and Finding A Career That Works For You, contributing author of Understanding Women with AD/HD, Past President of MCDA, served on the ADDA Board, and teaches Online Career Classes at www.ADDConsults.com. Peggy Bonsee, PCC, LLC September 20, 2006 6:00 PM ET “Mature Life Issues” Peggy Bonsee, PCC, LLC, Life Coach for AD/HD, Transition and Renewal/Retirement, began her practice in 1999. Certified by the International Coach Federation and Retirement Options, she has presented at national conferences on AD/HD, renewal/retirement, and transition. Her varied background in education, health, resources and numerous career and geographic relocations give her broad perspective on life change. Roland Rotz, Ph.D. September 20, 2006 9:00 PM ET “Perfecting the Art of Paying Attention to Everything” Roland Rotz, Ph.D. is a licensed child and adult psychologist, and director of the Lifespan Development Center in Carpinteria, CA. While offering a full range of diagnostic and clinical services, Dr. Rotz specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Over the past 20 years, he has focused his efforts on establishing and maintaining effective treatment strategies for all ages with ADHD. Over the years Dr. Rotz has begun and continues to facilitate ADHD and Clutter support groups for adults in Santa Barbara, CA. He is currently affiliated with University of California, Santa Barbara and Santa Barbara City College. As an expert in the field of attentional and organizational issues, Dr. Rotz gives presentations regionally and nationally. Most recently he has co-authored with Sarah D. Wright the book, Fidget to Focus Outwit Your Boredom: Sensory Strategies for Living with ADD. Peter S. Jensen, MD September 21, 2006 9:00 PM ET “Which Treatment for Which Person? Latest Research Findings” Dr. Jensen is the Director of the Center for the Advancement of Children’s Mental Health -- Putting Science to Work, and Ruane Professor of Child Psychiatry at the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. Before coming to Columbia University, Dr. Jensen was the Associate Director of Child and Adolescent Research at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). While at NIMH Dr. Jensen served as the lead NIMH investigator on the six-site NIMH and Department of Education-funded study of Multimodal Treatment of ADHD (the MTA Study), and also as an investigator on other NIMH multi-site studies. Dr. Jensen currently serves on many editorial and scientific advisory boards, is the author of over 200 scientific articles and book chapters, and has written or co-edited 13 books on children’s mental health. He has received many other national awards for his research, writing, and teaching. Dr. Jensen’s Center and his major areas of work and research emphasis include the application of research findings into “real world” clinical settings, and studies to encourage primary care practitioners and mental health specialists to apply optimal methods when working with children with ADHD, depression, and/or related conditions.
