Inclement Weather Information:
       Parent Contact Information - Parents as we are experiencing many weather related delays
and closings, we would like to remind you of some important information. Buncombe County
Schools are utilizing the Alert Now phone system to call parents and inform them of delays and
closings. This system is based on the phone number information that you have provided to the
school. If your phone numbers have changed or are not in service, you may miss very important
updates. If you have a number that you have disconnected and is then reassigned to a new user, those
people will be receiving our calls. This is proving to be a problem for the school. We are asking our
parents that if you have a new phone number, either home or cell, to please send in writing, a note to
your child’s teacher giving them the new numbers.
       2 Hour Delay Procedures – If a two hour delay is called for Buncombe County Schools or
the Enka District of Buncombe County Schools, school will begin exactly two hours late. This means
our doors will open at 9:20 a.m. and the tardy bell will be at 9:50 a.m. Buses will pick up students
two hours later than normal. For example, if your bus normally picks up at 7:15, then on a two hour
delay the bus will pick up at 9:15. On these two hour delay days, a light breakfast will be offered in
our cafeteria for students who eat breakfast at school. Lunch schedules will not change on these days.
       Early Dismissal Procedures - Please also inform your child’s teacher if there is a change in
early dismissal procedures. If school is dismissed early due to weather conditions, we will follow the
directions we have on hand. Teachers will not have time to call parents during this time.
       Community Updates - You may check the Buncombe County Schools website to see current
closings and delays at www.buncombe.k12.nc.us.org. Also, WLOS will update the community on
both their website and on the television.

Cafeteria News: Please be aware that if your child is a car rider in the mornings and needs to eat
breakfast at school, they need to arrive on campus before 7:45 a.m. Parents are also invited to eat
with their child in the cafeteria, we do, however, ask that parents not bring outside food in from a fast
food restaurant. Please be mindful of your child’s lunch account balance. Unpaid account balances
may result in your child receiving an alternate meal (sandwich, fruit and milk) until a payment plan
has been set up. Parents will be notified by Candler School before the alternate meal is served. Alert-
Now messages are sent weekly by the Child Nutrition Office informing parents of an outstanding
balance. If you have any questions, please call the Candler Cafeteria at 670-5036.
