Abstract
The subject of this dissertation is the development of a prototype for a database driven
website for an online magazine. The prototype can then be used to further develop the site
into a full digital edition for the internet.
Currently, the publishing industry is slow to adopt the internet as a medium for publishing
magazine content. The purpose of producing the prototype with up to date, quality content is
to give a publisher and possibly a prospective customer, a competitive advantage.
The features offered by the prototype include; user authentication, an advert management
system, smart form mail [12], form validation, style sheets, access to a database, simple
navigation and links to appropriate web sites.
The technologies used to build the prototype are PHP, MySQL and Dynamic Html
(DHTML) including; HTML/XHTML, Cascading Style Sheets and JavaScript. In addition,
the principles of human computer interaction were followed in the design and
implementation of the system to maximise usability. Some UML modelling was also used in
the design stages to facilitate a user centred system.
