The Story of Sangkuriang
Long ago, there was a woman who lost her
needle. Her name was Dayang Sumbi. She
announced to all people who found the needle will
get the prize. If it is a man, he will be her husband
and if it is a woman, she will be her sister.
One day, there was a dog named Tumang that
found the needle. Then, it gave it back to Dayang
Sumbi and as a reward, she married the dog.
Some years later, Dayang Sumbi had a child. His
name was Sangkuriang. He was a handsome boy.
His hobby was hunting. When he was hunting in
the forest, he found the dog and killed it.
Poor Sangkuriang, he didn’t know that the dog was his
father. Dayang Sumbi knew the truth. When Sangkuriang
got home, she was very angry at him. She hit and expelled
him from the house.
A couple of years later, Sangkuriang met a beautiful woman.
He didn’t know that the woman was his own mother. She
became young and pretty ever after because of the Gods.
He felt in love with the woman. He wanted to marry him.
Dayang Sumbi knew that the man was his son from his
birthmark. She refused the proposal. She asked him to make
a big boat and a lake only in one night before sunrise.
Sangkuriang agreed to do it by helping of genie.
Dayang Sumbi was afraid that it would be. So, she asked the
Gods to show the sun earlier. When the boat was almost
done, the hen cocked earlier and the sun rose earlier.
Sangkuriang was surprised and he was upset then he kicked
the boat until it became upturning boat like a mountain and
it’s called Tangkuban Perahu.
