COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course will examine contemporary (post-World War II, for the most part) Canadian literature, beginning with
Ethel Wilson’s Swamp Angel (1954), examining First Nations texts collected in Moses and Goldie’s third edition of
The Anthology of Canadian Native Literature in English (Oxford), Michael Ondaatje’s recently re-issued The
Collected Works of Billy the Kid, Chester Brown’s graphic novel Riel (2003), and Dorothy Trujillo Lusk’s poetry
collection Ogress Oblige (2001). Throughout, we will examine how issues of nation and region are buttressed – and
critiqued – via formal and identitarian concerns.
