Modeling CCHE admission standard Higher Education Admission Requirements (HEAR)
  for CU-Boulder admits
Lou McClelland, Perry Sailor, and Dave Deffenbacher
CU-Boulder Planning, Budget, and Analysis, 6/8//2006
Updated 5-07 Lou McClelland, Perry Sailor

Updated with fall 2007 admits as of 5/11/07. Data on fall 2006 admits are from about 5/20/06.
       PBA file reference: L:\ir\cche\adm\hear\heartest.sas, model

Note: CU-Boulder results generally look better with fall 2007 admits modeled than we did with fall 2006.
This reflects not only possible changes in the applicants, but also the fact that we admitted a lower
percentage of applicants in 2007. Do not presume that all 2006 to 2007 change is due to change in
applicants!

Everything on HEAR is an ESTIMATE, using currently available high school unit data only. Why this is an
estimate
 HS units were available/used for analysis only for new freshman admits – not for transfer admits with
under 30 transfer hours, who are also covered by HEAR
 HS units were missing for a few new freshman admits – under 5%. Minimal effect
 The HS unit counts used were verified by Admissions from 7th or 6th term transcripts for most admits
who had paid a confirmation deposit, but not for the 6000+ admits who have not paid deposits.
Unverified counts are based entirely on applicant self-report on the application for admission.
However, this is also what would be used for the real thing.
 We looked at HS units only. Many (almost half) CU-Boulder applicants have college credit from AP,
IB, and/or college courses taken while in HS. Some of this work may meet a HEAR component for
students who would otherwise not meet HEAR. Considering this work could only increase the
    numbers meeting HEAR.

The CU-Boulder application for admission collects self-reported units that “have or will be” completed by
the applicant. See question 26, page 15, of the PDF version of the app at
http://www.colorado.edu/prospective/freshman/apply/07applicationpkt.pdf

HEAR requirements: See admission policy http://www.state.co.us/cche/policy/newpolicies/i-partf.pdf

This analysis examines admitted first time freshman covered by the freshman admission standard. This
excludes all transfer students, including those covered by the freshman standard and by the transfer
standard. Correctly modeling the HEAR requirements for transfer students requires examining prior
college work as well as high school units, which is beyond the scope of this analysis.

ALL first time CU-Boulder freshman admits covered by the CCHE freshman standard

Note: Students with missing units data are excluded from the 2007 data below; it is not known if they
were included (as HEAR fails) or excluded from 2006. The proportion with missing data is small.

 Pass rate, HEAR 2008 and non-HEAR adm standard – 2006 admits
     88.8% pass HEAR 08
     80.6% pass both HEAR 08 and index/GED for Boulder (103)
     9.5% pass index/GED but not HEAR 08
     8.2% pass HEAR 08 but not index/GED
 Pass rate, HEAR 2008 and non-HEAR adm standard -- 2007 admits
     91.1% pass HEAR 08
     86.5% pass both HEAR 08 and index/GED for Boulder (103)
     8.0% pass index/GED but not HEAR 08
     4.6% pass HEAR 08 but not index/GED

 Pass rate, HEAR 2010 and non-HEAR
 The proportion passing HEAR drops from 88.8% (for HEAR08) to 74.6% with HEAR 2010 for 06
admits, and from 91.1% to 77.7% for 07 admits.
 This reduces the proportion who pass both HEAR10 and index/GED to 68.7% for 06 admits, and
       to 74.5% for 07 admits.

All remaining sections refer only to CU-Boulder COLORADO RESIDENT first time freshman admits

 Pass rate, HEAR 2008 and non-HEAR – Results similar to those for all freshman admits, for both

 Of 2006 resident admits not passing HEAR 2008, approximately 30% had a deficit in only the
Social Science area. This percentage with a single deficit was considerably higher than any other
any other area (English was the next highest at 22%).
 For 2007, the two leading single areas associated with not passing remained Social Science and
English, with 26% failing each area.
 Not surprisingly, for HEAR 2010, math was the largest single deficit area in 2006 and remains so
          in 2007.

 Relationship of high school units to the admission index: Higher index scores are related to
larger numbers of high school units (correlation with total units of 0.33 in 2006, 0.30 in 2007). The
index is more strongly related to total units taken and to natural science, math, and language units
than to social science and English units. These relationships hold for both 2006 and 2007.
