Release No. 09-06

PRESIDIO OF MONTEREY, Calif. --The Monterey-Salinas Transit (MST) system and the
Presidio of Monterey (POM) are teaming up to offer the Federal Government’s Mass
Transportation Benefit Program locally for many service members and Department of Defense
(DoD) employees at the Presidio and the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center.
The purpose of this program is to offset commuting costs for eligible participants, to reduce
pollution and traffic congestion, preserve the environment, and expand transportation

“We are eager to begin this alternative commuter bus program for the benefit of our service
members, faculty and staff,” said Col. Darcy A. Brewer, garrison commander, POM. “But
equally important, it should reduce our impact on the environment and reduce the number of cars
on the road.”

There will be no cost to qualified applicants as the program is funded by the Department of
Transportation to help conserve energy, the environment and reduce road congestion

"MST is proud to offer this service to help local members of the military community offset the
ever growing cost of transportation in a way that also helps reduce traffic and greenhouse gas
emissions," added MST General Manager/CEO Carl Sedoryk.

Eligible employees include: active duty service members, DoD employees and non-appropriated
fund employees who commute to work from outside of the Presidio of Monterey.

Bus lines will be established to service clusters of participants. Monterey-Salinas Transit plans to
provide express bus service to and from the following areas:

Salinas Monterey
Pacific Grove Seaside
Marina Fitch and Marshall Parks
Hayes and Stilwell Parks Schoonover, Preston and Fredrick Parks

“We will work with MST to design routes and schedules that best serve the participants and the
community,” said Shawn Marshall, MTB program manager for POM. “The more participants we
enroll the more flexible the program can be.”
