Counselling Skills: The Egan Method
The Psychology Centre was established in 1990 to offer a unique combination of educational and professional opportunities to graduate psychology students, while providing quality low-cost psychological services to the community. The Psychology Centre is an initiative of the psychology discipline within the School of Social and Behavioural Sciences, a department which has achieved a widespread and enviable reputation for its teaching and research. What is the Egan Method? The Egan method was named for the theorist and author Gerard Egan and has been dominant in the practice and theory of counselling since its inception. This method of counselling can, at the most basic level, be described as a three-stage process: identification of the current situation (Where am I, the client, now?); identification of the desired situation (Where do I, the client, want to be?); and the formulation of strategies (How do I, the client, get to where I want to be?). This process is facilitated by the “skilled helper” using the techniques described by Egan. Course description Counselling: The Egan method will introduce the Egan method of counselling for working with individuals. Specifically, topics covered in this section of the course will include working with: children; adolescents; and adults; allowing students to explore the important differences between working with these client groups. In addition, this course will introduce working with groups and group counselling programs. As part of this course, other (complimentary) theoretical frameworks and techniques will also be discussed.
