Management cover letter Well, should you include a cover document along with a resume when responding to a job? Or should you post a cover note when you post your resume to a job board? If so, why? I've heard discussion state, "Why include this, no one reads a cover letter today. If you are just out of university, a two or four year experienced professional or a "C" level professional, you must include a document with a resume submission or a posting on a job board. As a corporate recruiter, I hired 600-plus professionals. I used a cover letter as a supplement to the resume, looking first for grammar errors, then looking for type-o's. If that scan resulted in an error free submission, then I looked for content and the content was the critical part of the document. The content of the letter permitted me and other HR professionals (Yes, I'm including myself as an HR professional) to see if you could write a sentence and carry a thought while responding to a specific job requirement. Today, you would be amazed how many people can not respond to an opening by providing a note with clarity and purpose. The cover note would be the first litmus-test in the submission process. In my world, a solid, pointed, and meaningful document defines "MOVE FORWARD / DO NOT MOVE FORWARD." If someone can not convey a purpose or idea in writing, how could they be successful communicating in a position? Take your time and write a great memo and submit with a resume when presenting your qualifications for a position. Any edge you can have could make a difference in today's market. If you are not comfortable with a cover note or the content, and if you want to be certain, seek a professional to get your resume / cover note / job search approach / targeted sectors / acceptable salary in place before the submitting to a prospective client. Remember, no letter could result a "turn-off" to a client. Today's clients find reasons not to interview. This lack of a cover note could be a major reason.
