Typical Questions and Information Needed To Cost Your Proposal

1) Provide the proposal documentaion including any guidance and conditions and/or send a link to the funder's
web page for the application.

2) Give proposed start and end dates for your project. If you hold a fixed term contract which expires prior to
the proposed end date of the project, you may not be eligible to apply, or a senior colleague on a permanent
contract may be required to act as a supervisor. If you are close to retirement age and the duration of the
project will extend beyond your expected date of retirement from UEL, your School will need to make a decision
on this basis as the costing implications are different.

3) Give the amount of time (in days or FTE) the applicant will be spending on the project. UEL uses a standard
220 days per annum (18 days per month) for a full time FTE.

4) Give the amount of time (in days or FTE) any other existing staff will be contributing to the project. Please
state their full names and their School/Service. You should always make sure that you have the agreement of
such existing staff and the approval of their line manager to their involvement in the project. Consider whether
(e.g., for technicians) you should be seeking support for a "pool technician" rather than a named individual.

5) Give the amount of time (in days or FTE) any new staff (e.g. Research Assistant, Research Fellow etc) will be
spending on the project once recruited. Please indicate the proposed grade for these new staff and/or the
estimated annual gross income.

6) Supply estimates of costs for travel & subsistence, consumables, etc., including VAT as we will not be
able to reclaim them from HMRC. Your School Buyer may be able to assist you in obtaining quotes.

7) Deadline for the proposal.

Other items to note
8) If you delay the start of the project, you will probably need to have the project costs recalculated. This can be
a time consuming process, so please think carefully about the start and end dates when you initially approach
colleagues in Finance.
