8 Week Undergraduate Research Internship – Summer 2009
Howard University NOAA Center for Atmospheric Sciences (NCAS) and the University of
Washington Joint Institute for the Study of the Atmosphere and Ocean (JISAO) announce three
jointly-funded research internship positions at the University of Washington for summer 2009.
Research at JISAO, University of Washington, and its NOAA partners, spans the entire range of
environmental science with specific emphasis on atmospheric and oceanic physical and
chemical sciences, hydrology, and marine ecosystems. Summaries of research activities are in
the JISAO Annual Report available on the web at http://www.jisao.washington.edu/. Possible
research activities include laboratory work, computational modeling, and participation in field
studies. Undergraduate students with an interest in any of the sciences are invited to apply for
these internships. Please include a statement of general research interests in the application
cover letter. The chosen applicants’ research interests and abilities will be matched with UW or
NOAA scientists and the needs of their research programs.
The internship stipend is approximately $4200. In addition to the stipend, travel expenses to
and from Seattle and housing at the University of Washington—a single room in a shared
apartment—including some funds for meals, will be provided. The start date is flexible but work
should begin by the last week in June.
Internship location: The work location will be either at a NOAA facility in Seattle or the
University of Washington campus.
Transportation: The NOAA Northwest Regional Office is about 5 miles from the UW campus
and is on a main bus route.
Application deadline: February 28, 2009
