This intensive, nationally acclaimed program is designed for beginning as well as experienced legal workers. All students are trained to assist trial attorneys, interview witnesses, investigate complex fact patterns, research the law and help prepare cases for courtroom litigation. The instruction is practice oriented and relates to those areas of the law in which legal assistants are most in demand. There are no prerequisites, although an associate degree (two-year) in arts and sciences or its equivalent is very helpful. Students are expected to complete a significant amount of homework for each weekend session. This non-credit program helps students increase their office’s efficiency, productivity and billable hours. It also provides students with marketable job skills. It includes all 20 sessions, training/ class materials, class refreshments, company visits, certificates and graduation ceremony. This non-credit certificate program, consisting of 20 classes and organized into four modules, provides participants with the basic conceptual and practical leadership skills needed to function effectively as leaders within organizations. The program is interactive, application oriented and hands-on. Four of the classes are held at different companies in the region — to further develop participants’ knowledge of local businesses as well as foster networking opportunities. Ethical standards and social responsibility in the business community are a recurrent theme throughout the program. The instructors incorporate both case studies and group activities into their presentations. CERTIfICATION A Binghamton University Certificate of Completion is issued for the successful completion of each workshop. CEu Continuing Education Units (CEUs) are issued upon successful completion of a workshop. The course engages attendees in analyzing and using thought leadership and the application of these ideas within their own company. It is designed for people who have little or no accounting background and are not required to keep books but may need to understand cost benefits from budgets, projects and continuous improvement activities. Examples from several other companies will also be used to help participants better understand the effort and attention required. This is our third year offering this very successful program for local young women ages 12 to 18. Last year, 100 girls attended the event. Introducing girls to positive role models and female leaders in the community is our goal, as well as assisting them, through workshops and skill-building sessions, in identifying their own leadership styles, confidence-building and unique attributes to help mold them as our future female leaders. CONfERENCE CONvERSATIONS IN ThE DISCIPlINE: MENTAl hEAlTh DISPARITIES IN NEw yORk AND SuRROuNDING AREAS May 1, 2009 | 8 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. A collaboration among Binghamton University’s Decker School of Nursing, Division of Social Work and the Department of Psychology Alcohol and Other Drugs Program, and SUNY Delhi’s Department of Nursing and Allied Health, College of Nursing and the SUNY Upstate Medical University Medical Library, this conference is for faculty, clinicians, students and administrators and particularly those who interact with rural populations in New York state. The keynote speaker is James L. Stone, former commissioner of the New York State Office of Mental Health. Conference goals are to identify and explore existing gaps in knowledge regarding mental healthcare services essential to children, adolescents, adults and elders residing in rural New York and surrounding areas; to provide a forum in which scholars from various disciplines can come together to share their findings from research pertaining to mental health in rural populations; to explore the existing models and interventions specific to improving mental healthcare across the lifespan in rural areas; to encourage participants to work collaboratively to develop solutions that will increase access to mental health services for rural populations; and to create an impetus for maximizing collaboration across disciplines and institutions for developing networks for subsequent research targeting the improvement of mental healthcare delivery in rural areas.
