Signpost – January 2009 Hello. Happy New Year! My name is Louise Harte. Welcome to the January edition of Signpost, online magazine for Islington Deaf people. This month includes information about:  Health Awareness Day  A new magazine,  Homes for Islington (HFI)  Disability Panel  Debt Advice  Events Health Awareness Day for Islington Deaf residents Islington Council are pleased to announce a health information day for Deaf people who live in Islington. The event will include presentations about healthy eating, the heart, medication, stress management, mental health, cancer screening, sexual health, PALS, role of social workers, DISC (Welfare Rights Service) and interpreters. When: Thursday 19 March Where: Town Hall, Upper Street. Time: 9.30 – 4.00pm Interpreters are provided. Free lunch, tea and coffee. A PALS officer and a Pharmacist will also be available to talk to people in private (one to one) during the lunch break. There will be information stalls - information will be sent out soon. New Magazine – Independent Living in Islington Islington Council has produced a new magazine for adults who use social services or support services, and their carers. It is called “Independent living in Islington” The magazine was launched on 1 December last year - International day of Disabled people. Magazine includes information about:  Adult Social Services  Individual Budgets  Working with carers  HFI  NHS  Camden and Islington NHS Foundation Trust  Local Voluntary and Community Groups 1 The magazine also includes interviews with local residents about how they lead an independent life in Islington. If you would like a copy, please send an email to: ssconsultation@islington.gov.uk Homes for Islington (HFI) Disability Panel It was set up in August 2008. The meetings take place every two months. The panel includes 12 disabled residents; two are Deaf. The group is run by Disability action in Islington (DAII). The aim of the meetings is to review resident’s experiences as HFI tenants. The panel meet and report on and share their experiences of using HFI services, so HFI can make improvements. Debt Advice Disability Action in Islington (DAII) has set up Debt Advice sessions for Deaf and Disabled people or carer/parents of disabled children living in Islington. The service is provided by the Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB). You can come and talk to someone about budgeting, money problems and bills. The service runs on the second Thursday of every month. The next sessions are on 12 February and 12 March. If you want to make an appointment please contact DAII, and ask them to book an interpreter. Booking: Email access@almeida.co.uk National Maritime Museum (NMM) Greenwich – SE London Deaf Astronomy for the international year of Astronomy 2009: an evening with the stars. Why not spend an hour star gazing with astronomers using a late 19th century 28-inch diameter telescope the largest of its kind in Britain. How black holes are formed and how beautiful clouds of glowing gas are created. It covers the period from 1850 to the present day.
