							                                      2010 Susan M. Hunter Scholarship
                                             ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

•   Student must be the son or daughter of a corrections employee (current full-time, retired, or deceased who draw
    or have drawn their salaries directly from the Department of Corrections) within an ASCA-member department of
    corrections (includes Federal Bureau of Prisons). County jail employees, vendor employees, Correction
    employees themselves, their siblings, spouses, and grandchildren are not eligible.

•   Student must be enrolled full-time in an accredited two-year or four-year college or university, or an accredited
    graduate program.

•   Incoming first-time freshman must have a minimum high school GPA of 3.0; Enrolled full-time students must
    have a minimum college GPA of 3.0; Graduate students’ field of study must be Corrections/Criminal Justice.

•   Aside from previous award recipients all other applicants must include an essay question response (MAX 300
    words - ENGLISH only): "Describe your career goals and what this scholarship would mean to the completion of
    your undergraduate/graduate education". Graduate students must include a description of their
    Corrections/Criminal Justice career goals.

•   Complete and submit Scholarship Application Form by March 31, 2010.

•   APPLICATION MUST BE SUBMITTED ONLINE.

•   All required documentation must be postmarked no later than March 31, 2010. Faxed or hand-delivered
    applications/documentation will not be accepted.

THE FOLLOWING ITEMS MUST BE SENT AS A HARD COPY TO ASCA AT:

1) Official Transcript
  • Your transcript may be sent to ASCA by you or your high school or college as long as it meets the criteria as an
  OFFICIAL transcript.
  • An official transcript arrives in a sealed envelope with a school official's signature, OR a seal across the closure,
  OR, an official transcript has a raised seal, OR is printed on security paper. An official transcript is NOT: a printout
  from a website; a photocopy of a transcript; a summary of classes “in progress.”

2) Test Scores (ONLY for Incoming Freshmen)
  Enrolled undergraduate students should not send SAT/ACT scores. If the applicant was not required to take the
  SAT/ACT for his/her college of choice, note that explanation in the Comments box.

3) Two Recommendation Letters
  Two recommendation letters are required. DO NOT send more than two letters.
  • At least one recommendation letter must be from a teacher.
  • A recommendation letter from the applicant’s parent is not acceptable.
  • Letters must include a date and may not be written before November 2009.
  • Recommendation letters are NOT letters of acceptance to college or receipt of other honors.

All required documentation must be postmarked by March 31, 2010. Faxed or hand-delivered applications/
documentation will NOT be accepted. DO NOT send any additional materials. Cover letters, photos, resumes, copies
of certificates/honors, newspaper clippings, etc. will NOT be accepted.

RESULTS:
•  In 2009, scholarships were awarded in the amounts of $1,000 for undergraduate students, $1,500 for graduate
   students and $500 for continuing award winners.
•  The number of scholarships awarded depends upon donations received. In 2009, approximately 500 students
   applied for the Susan M. Hunter Scholarship. Out of that number 21 scholarships were awarded.
•  The Scholarship Review Committee will make its decisions in early June 2010. Non-recipients will be notified by
   email; recipients will be notified by phone, and their names will be posted on the ASCA website.
