History
• LEED was originally based on the BREEAM system in the UK • It was modified to make it less cumbersome • We have gone through several revisions • LEED 2.0, 2.1, and 2.2 • 2001 – first bond, Board of trustees – Mona Field instrumental • Now the first major revision - 2009
LEED 2009
• Visioning session • The original intention was to deliver a bookshelf system • That is each of the credit stood on its own so that depending on building type • Too ambitious – diluted

– Core Credits – Universal intents across all systems – Semi Universal – the credit is the same amongst all the different products however the requirements is different – Specific credits for each of the different LEED products

• Market alignment – specific credits • Credit fixes – there a few discrepancies that needed to be clarified and fixed • CIR – Scrub. Incorporate repeated CIR that could fit into a credit

• Weighting of credits
– There are 100 core points and 10 bonus points
• More emphasis on Water
– Introduction of a prerequisite for water and increase in points
• More points of for Energy • 10 bonus points in ID category • Regionalism – 4 bonus
Weighting
• Number of resources include case studies, SimaPro, one of the most powerful tools was TRACI from the EPA. LCA of a two story typical office building. • http://www.epa.gov/nrmrl/std/sab/traci/ • Focused on Carbon footprint, • Environmental quality rather that indoor ventilation • Fractional points were rounded to a whole number • Market – orientated perspective to support market sectors

• Pre-requisite: min water efficiency of 20% • There are now 2 points for every credit • There is an additional 2 points for 40% water efficiency

• Dominate : 35 points ( doubled from the previous version) • Energy efficiency, renewable energy and measurement and verification.
LEED projects
