IVLP: LIST OF FY-2010 MULTI-REGIONAL PROGRAMS (MRPS) FIRST QUARTER: Title: Contemporary Challenges in American Higher Education Dates: October 5 ) 23, 2009 Program Team: Susan Lockwood/Sequita Robinson This multi-regional project for post-secondary educators, university faculty and administrators of colleges and universities, and journalists with professional responsibilities for covering higher education, will examine the U.S. system of higher education, its structure, administration and support services. Participants will explore the needs and responsibilities of higher education and its changing relationship with other elements of society. The program will facilitate discussions on topics of mutual concern such as degree equivalencies, accreditation, student aid, admissions, counseling services, programs to meet the needs of students with disabilities, and internationalization of curriculum and the institutional infrastructure. Title: Parks, Biodiversity and Ecotourism Management Dates: October 13 ) 30, 2009 Program Team: Janice Brummond/Azza Zaki This multi-regional project, designed for environmentalists, NGO leaders, academics, tour operators, land management specialists and government officials at all levels, will examine the U.S. national park system, conservation policy, environmental protection and tourism standards. Participants will view the range of services, infrastructure, concessions and tourist information in U.S. parks and natural attractions; and learn how local communities give input to the planning and consultation process for tourism development. The program will foster discussion and among field experts and local communities on the roles of governments and the private sector in biodiversity preservation, parks management and tourism facility development. Title: Elementary and Secondary School Education in the U.S. Dates: October 19 ) November 6, 2009 Program Team: Marion Lange/Azza Zaki This multi-regional project for teachers, school administrators, counselors and government officials from ministries of education, will provide an overview of the U.S. system of education and current trends and challenges in elementary and secondary school education. Through school visits and meetings with policy makers, participants will explore innovative initiatives that respond to the needs of American youth to prepare them to become successful and responsible citizens. Title: Combating Trafficking in Persons (2 weeks) Dates: October 26 ) November 6, 2009 Program Team: Isabelle Zsoldos/Sequita Robinson This 2-week multi-regional project, designed for government officials with responsibilities relating to trafficking in persons, as well as immigration officials, human rights activists, academics, law enforcement officers and representatives of social service organizations, will examine the global problem of trafficking in persons, methods and best practices to prevent trafficking in persons, including prosecution of and enforcement against traffickers. Participants will learn about initiatives to protect, assist and provide social reintegration of victims of trafficking. Title: International Crime Issues (2 weeks) Dates: November 2 ) 13, 2009 Program Team: Susan Lockwood/Sequita Robinson This multi-regional project, designed for law enforcement, government officials, attorneys, judges, and academics (no journalists) will examine current U.S. foreign policy objectives to solicit global cooperation against international crime. The program will explore the structure of the U.S. criminal justice system and U.S. responses to a range of international criminal activities, such as international terrorism, drug trafficking, trafficking in persons, money laundering, electronic security, and organized crime. The program will also examine the impact of international crime on the political, economic and social stability of the global community. Title: HIV/AIDS Education and Prevention in the U.S. Dates: November 16 ) December 4, 2009 Program Team: Isabelle Zsoldos/Azza Zaki This multi-regional project, designed for medical professionals, educators, community organizers and NGO leaders, ministry of health representatives and government officials involved in HIV/AIDS policy formulation, will examine trends in the education, prevention, treatment and management of HIV/AIDS at the national, state and local levels. The program will examine the latest research and clinical findings that have contributed to reducing incidents of infection, with particular emphasis paid to the Center for Disease Control's education and research program in the United States and abroad for at-risk populations. SECOND QUARTER: Title: NGOs and Civic Activism Dates: January 11 ) 29, 2010 Program Team: Janice Brummond/Sequita Robinson This multi-regional project, designed for NGO managers, community leaders, academics, activists, and government officials interested in civic or community issues, will explore the vital role of the NGO sector in the U.S. and the relationship between non-profit organizations, local governments, the business sector, and communities. The program will introduce participants to a wide range of public service and advocacy organizations and the different methodologies used to develop and further their organizations, missions through public communication, fundraising and use of volunteers. NEW: Title: Film in the U.S. Dates: January 11 ) 29, 2010 Program Team: Marion Lange/Azza Zaki The project, designed for film makers, producers, screenwriters, broadcasters, distributors, academics, and technicians, will provide an in-depth examination of the American film industry. Participants will be introduced to the diversity of filmmaking in the U.S., from large Hollywood film productions to the small independent films, television, and documentary film productions. Discussions on film-making as a social, cultural and political commentary will underline the importance of freedom of expression. Participants will examine the stages of film-making, from development through production, to sales and distribution, as well as the latest technological developments. Film screenings at a major film festival will offer networking opportunities among international and American film experts to promote long-lasting professional linkages. Title: Protection of Intellectual Property Rights Dates: January 25 ) February 12, 2010 Program Team: Susan Lockwood/Sequita Robinson This multi-regional project, designed for government officials, business leaders, attorneys, judges and law enforcement officers, will examine the responsibility of the public and private sectors for implementing and enforcing higher intellectual property standards in countries and businesses worldwide. Participants will gain an appreciation for the rule of law in global trade and business communities, examine major policy challenges posed by technology on intellectual property protection, and explore efforts of law enforcement to regulate and enforce intellectual property rights. NEW: Title: Adult Education and Community Colleges in the U.S. Dates: February 1 ) 19, 2010 Program Team: Isabelle Zsoldos/Azza Zaki This multi-regional project, designed for academic administrators, civic leaders, student advisors/counselors, and ministry officials involved in education issues, will examine the variety of programs and services offered by community colleges, universities, vocational schools, and other institutions geared to the needs of adult learners. Participants will examine the role of community colleges and adult education networks in meeting the needs of a diverse population seeking continuing education, language learning, skill development, or retraining. Through school visits and meetings with curriculum designers, social scientists, and economists, participants will examine curriculum models that aim to serve the changing needs of a population facing an increasingly competitive global economy. Title: Women and Entrepreneurship Dates: February 8 ) 26, 2010 Program Team: Janice Brummond/Azza Zaki This multi-regional project for women entrepreneurs, business leaders, government officials, academics and economic journalists, will illustrate the impact of women owned small businesses on the U.S. economy. The program will present the U.S. economy as one developed through equal access to economic opportunity. Participants will discuss the social, economic and political factors that influence and encourage the development of women as entrepreneurs and owners or managers of small, medium and large businesses. Title: U.S. Trade Policy Dates: February 8 ) 26, 2010 Program Team: Marion Lange/Sequita Robinson This multi-regional project, designed for economic and trade specialists, policy formulators, entrepreneurs and business leaders, legal specialists, academics, and journalists reporting on financial issues, will examine U.S. trade interests, policies, and institutions, and the political, economic, social and cultural factors that affect U.S. trade policy. The program will explore efforts at the federal, state, local and private industry levels to increase American competitiveness in the global marketplace and the role of the U.S. in international trade agreements at the international and regional levels. NEW: Title: Economic and Business Reporting in the U.S. (2 weeks) Dates: February 22 ) March 5, 2010 Program Team: Alison Moylan/Azza Zaki This multi-regional project for journalists specializing in economic and business reporting will examine current international and domestic financial conditions and the role of the media in reporting to the public on finance, business, public policy and economics. They will examine current financial conditions in the U.S. and discuss perspectives on emerging financial markets and the global economy. Participants will visit American media outlets to discuss techniques to enhance business reporting. Title: State and Local Governments in the U.S. Dates: March 1 ) 19, 2010 Program Team: Isabelle Zsoldos/Sequita Robinson This multi-regional project, designed for elected officials, public administrators, academics, and journalists will explore the functions of state and local government and their interactions with the federal government. They will examine the separation of powers, the cooperation between the public and private sectors, and learn the responsibilities of state and local government in administering public services. Title: Women and Justice Dates: March 1 ) 19, 2010 Program Team: Janice Brummond/Azza Zaki This multi-regional project, timed to coincide with International Women's Day, is designed for managers of non-governmental organizations, community activists, and government officials involved in promoting women's issues, will examine the role of NGOs in addressing issues that affect women worldwide. The project will examine the impact of the non-profit sector, in cooperation with government, in developing initiatives and programs that help increase women's political participation and economic opportunities, and support women's access to education and health care. Title: American Youth: Inspiring Leadership and Civic Participation Dates: March 8 - 27, 2010 Program Team: Marion Lange/Azza Zaki This multi-regional project is designed for individuals who work with and motivate young people to take a more active leadership role in their respective communities. Participants may include educators, youth counselors, community leaders, social scientists, and members of the media involved in promoting civic activism among youth, will explore the benefits of developing youth leadership skills in American civil society. By examining the role of both educators and community groups that encourage young people to participate in community-building activities, this project will illustrate the impact of positive and constructive youth-oriented projects. The program will include volunteer activities and site visits to organizations that promote leadership, creativity, and responsible citizenship, particularly those spear-headed by young volunteers. Title: Teaching English as a Second Language Dates: March 15 ) April 2, 2010 Program Team: Susan Lockwood/Azza Zaki This multi-regional project, designed for government education officials, directors and teachers of English language programs, will examine the organization and methodology of various American Teaching of English as a Second Language programs, especially as they apply to large groups of students. The program will provide opportunities for participants to meet with American professional colleagues to discuss current trends, topics, and developments in the education field; to better understand the U.S. education system; and to develop linkages. THIRD QUARTER: NEW: Title: Volunteerism: Together We Can Dates: April 12 ) 30, 2010 Program Team: Marion Lange and Alison Moylan/Azza Zaki and Sequita Robinson This multi-regional project will bring up to 100 participants from around the world to examine volunteerism and community service in the United States. Designed for NGO leaders, civic and community leaders, government officials and educators, the program will provide a hands-on examination of the impact of volunteerism both on the volunteers themselves and the communities they serve. Through visits to a range of non-profit organizations, charitable foundations, faith-based organizations, community groups and corporations, participants will learn best practices for volunteer recruitment, retention and management. They will examine how volunteers of all backgrounds and ages, especially young people, are inspired to help foster a culture of service and civic responsibility. The program will also look at the impact of technology -- particularly social networking ) in developing new avenues for civic engagement and participation. Each participant will have the opportunity to actively volunteer during the program. Title: U.S. Judicial System Dates: April 19 ) May 7, 2010 Program Team: Isabelle Zsoldos/Azza Zaki This multi-regional project for judges, lawyers, academics, court administrators, ministry officials and community leaders, will provide an introduction to the U.S. judicial system with an emphasis on federalism and the separation of powers. The program will introduce the civil and criminal justice systems, the U.S. trial process, court management procedures, alternate dispute resolution, mediation and judicial training opportunities. NEW: Title: Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation in the U.S. Dates: April 19 ) May 7, 2010 Program Team: Janice Brummond/Azza Zaki Landscape changes from agriculture, forestry, fishing, urban sprawl and transportation infrastructure are perhaps the major cause of biodiversity losses worldwide. This MRP will address the to conserve the biodiveristy of various land and water environments. explore how local and regional land use decisions influence biodiversity protection efforts. Participants will examine challenges in urban and agricultural landscapes as well as U.S. efforts to protect species and habitat diversity through watershed management and wetlands mitigation. This project is designed for environmentalists, representatives from ministries of environment, government officials, academics, environmental journalists and representatives of non-governmental organizations working on land use and water management issues. NEW: Title: Global Health Priorities Dates: April 26 ) May 14, 2010 Program Team: Susan Lockwood//Sequita Robinson This multi-regional project for government officials, medical professionals, community educators and social leaders, as well as journalists reporting on health issues, will explore international health concerns and the common challenges facing the global community in preventing, treating and managing chronic and non-communicable diseases, such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and cancer ) which account for 60% of all deaths worldwide. The program will assess U.S. and international health care programs from a variety of perspectives. It will evaluate state and local efforts at preventative screening and wellness programs, such as projects promoting maternal and child health and immunizations. The MRP will also examine public awareness campaigns about health issues and the effects of economic uncertainties, urbanization, poverty and other external challenges to health care delivery systems. NEW: Title: Children in the U.S. Justice System Dates: May 3 ) 21, 2010 Program Team: Alison Moylan/Sequita Robinson This project for judges and attorneys, social workers, and NGO leaders advocating for children's issues, will examine the juvenile justice system in the U.S. It will also explore family law and custody issues, including the Hague Convention on international child abduction. Participants will compare best practices in advocacy and protection of children, and in dealing with young offenders. NEW: Title: U.S. Foreign Policy and Energy Security (2 weeks) Dates: May 10 ) 21, 2010 Program Team: Marion Lange/Sequita Robinson The world community faces unprecedented challenges in global energy supply and distribution. Many of the world's major energy producing regions are vulnerable to supply disruptions because of economic uncertainties or geopolitical tension. This multi-regional project is intended for government officials, political leaders, policy analysts, academics, NGO leaders and journalists involved in developing, interpreting, explaining and influencing policies on energy security. Through meetings with policy makers, industry leaders, researchers, and citizen activist groups, the participants in this MRP will learn about the impact of security threats to global energy markets and discuss the development of alternative energy supplies and other strategies for energy independence. Title: International Security Issues (2 weeks) Dates: May 17 ) 28, 2010 Program Team: Isabelle Zsoldos/Sequita Robinson This 2-week multi-regional project, designed for international security specialists, foreign policy analysts and decision makers engaged in national, regional, and global security issues (no journalists), will provide an understanding of U.S. foreign policy as it intersects with the nation's security interests. Participants will examine the U.S. policymaking process and the various players and viewpoints involved in making and implementing security policy. Participants will meet with foreign policy practitioners, national security experts, legislators, scholars, and American citizens to gain an appreciation for the complexities of U.S. national security policy and efforts to promote international cooperation against emerging security threats. Title: U.S. Foreign Policy: The Decision Making Process (2 weeks) Dates: May 17 ) 28, 2010 Program Team: Janice Brummond/Azza Zaki This 2-week multi-regional project, designed for government officials, foreign policy analysts and decision-makers, politicians, scholars and journalists interested in strengthening their understanding of U.S. foreign policy, will examine how the U.S. international affairs community is structured and how it formulates, implements and influences policy. Participants will become acquainted with the key players in the public and private sectors who are instrumental in the foreign policy cycle and will hear from the Executive and Legislative branches about decision-making dynamics. Title: Small Business Development in the U.S. Date: May 24 - June 11, 2010 Program Team: Susan Lockwood /Sequita Robinson This multi-regional project, designed for entrepreneurs, small business owners, government officials promoting economic development, and others involved in promoting small business development, will highlight the social, economic, and political factors that influence and encourage the development of private enterprise in the U.S. The program will provide examples of small businesses in the U.S. and will explore the growth of business opportunities created by the Internet and the expansion of the global marketplace. Title: Investigative Journalism in the U.S. Dates: June 7 ) 25, 2010 Program Team: Alison Moylan /Sequita Robinson This multi-regional project, designed for working journalists; reporters and editors from print, TV, and radio; online journalists; and professors of journalism, will examine the role of responsible investigative journalism in U.S. democracy and its role to inform the public on public policy issues that affect government, local communities, business, the environment, and society. Participants will learn about the values and ethics that underlie investigative journalism and will examine the effects of investigative journalism on U.S. history, as well as on current politics and society. NEW: Title: The U.S. Mayor and Local Governments Dates: June 7 ) 25, 2010 Program Team: Marion Lange/Azza Zaki Timed to coincide with the annual convention of the U.S. Conference of Mayors, this multi-regional program is intended for mayors of large, medium, and small cities, and for elected and appointed city and town council officials. The program will explore the dynamics of local governments in the U.S. and, in particular, the role of the U.S. mayor and city and town councils. Participants will be introduced to the various types of local governments in the U.S., the players and functions of local government, and how local government serves the interests of its electorate. Title: The Role of NGOs in Promoting Global Women's Issue Dates: June 14 ) July 2, 2010 Program Team: Janice Brummond/Azza Zaki This Multi-Regional Project is designed for women in the legal field, including judges and attorneys, as well as NGO leaders advocating for women's issues. The program will examine the American legal system and U.S. efforts to protect and strengthen women's human rights. The program will promote international cooperation in assisting women and strengthening the rule of law, and it will highlight the importance of education toward improving women's access to justice. Title: American Libraries Dates: June 21 ) July 9, 2010 Program Team: Susan Lockwood/Sequita Robinson This multi-regional project, designed for library professionals involved in overall management and policy-making for programs and activities in both government and private libraries, will explore the role and functions of libraries and information specialists in U.S. society. Participants will examine the wide variety of U.S. libraries and the latest information technology applied by libraries, including online and digital services. Title: Cultural Heritage Preservation in the U.S. Dates: June 28 ) July 16, 2010 Program Team: Isabelle Zsoldos/Azza Zaki This multi-regional project, designed for cultural historians, anthropologists, social scientists, educators, museum curators, and government officials who are interested in the preservation of cultural heritage, will examine the institutions and individuals involved in the research, presentation, conservation and education of American cultural heritage. It will demonstrate the significance of identifying, documenting, protecting, and interpreting history and culture, and offer opportunities for professional dialogue to increase international cooperation. FOURTH QUARTER: NEW: Title: Environmental Law Enforcement in the U.S. Dates: July 12 ) 30, 2010 Program Team: Janice Brummond/Sequita Robinson This multi-regional project will address the challenges of implementing and enforcing U.S. and trans-boundary environmental laws and regulations. Leaders from government and non-governmental organizations, journalists, legal experts and law enforcement specialists will explore national, state, and local efforts to investigate and prosecute environmental crimes such as major pollutant emissions to air, water or soil; illegal activities in parks and protected areas; and improper disposal of wastes. Participants will be introduced to pollution prevention strategies, social responsibility programs and resource conservation alternatives that are designed to help industries, communities, and individuals avoid liability and promote sustainable development. The program will also discuss international cooperation in combating environmental crimes. Title: Conflict Resolution Dates: July 19 ) August 6, 2010 Program Team: Marion Lange/Azza Zaki This multi-regional project, designed for conflict resolution practitioners, academics who teach preventive diplomacy, community leaders, journalists and diplomats who are pursuing conflict resolution and peace studies, will examine U.S. perspectives on the use of preventive diplomacy and conflict resolution in both domestic and international spheres. Participants will explore political, academic, economic and social perspectives on conflict resolution and peace studies to gain a better understanding of U.S. government agencies and those public and private organizations currently active in traditional and alternative diplomacy and dispute mediation. Title: NGO Management in the U.S. Dates: July 19 ) August 6, 2010 Program Team: Susan Lockwood/Sequita Robinson This multi-regional project, designed for NGO managers, community leaders, activists, and government officials, will highlight the role of the non-profit sector in U.S. society, and the ways that non-governmental organizations (NGOs) promote democracy and civic involvement. Through visits to non-profit organizations, associations, foundations and public service organizations, participants will examine innovative non-profit management strategies, including strategic planning, fundraising, board development, and utilizing volunteers. Title: T.V. Broadcast Journalism in the U.S. (2 weeks) Dates: July 26 ) August 6, 2010 Program Team: Isabelle Zsoldos/Azza Zaki This multi-regional project for television producers, program directors, journalists, editors, administrative personnel, professors of journalism, and commercial and educational media officials, will examine the history, structure, practices and trends in television broadcast journalism in the U.S. Participants will discuss the role of television as a medium that both influences and reflects American society. They will explore the current and potential contributions of television broadcast journalism to the formation of an informed citizenry within a diverse, democratic, decentralized society. NEW: Title: Emerging Markets and the Global Economy Dates: August 2 ) 20, 2010 Program Team: Alison Moylan/Sequita Robinson This MRP will examine the inter-connectedness between emerging markets and developed markets. According to its quarterly World Economic Forecast, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) predicts that emerging markets, such as those widely recognized in Brazil, Russia, India and China, will increasingly drive world economic growth as a result of their integration into the global economy. Designed for economists, economic policy makers, entrepreneurs, business leaders, academics, and business journalists, the program will examine the trends in the U.S. and around the world that have contributed to the dynamic changes taking place in the global economy. NEW: U.S. Agricultural Trade and Food Security Dates: August 9 ) 27, 2010 Program Team: Janice Brummond/Azza Zaki This multi-regional project is designed for officials in government and the private sector including trade specialists, economic policy makers, agricultural and food safety experts, as well as journalists covering agricultural trade issues. The program will examine the intersection of U.S. policies on international trade, sustainable agriculture, and consumer health and safety. The participants will explore how U.S. farmers and ranchers meet the complex economic and environmental challenges of providing a low cost, high quality, and safe food products for both domestic consumption and international export. The program will analyze the political, social, environmental, and economic forces that influence U.S. agricultural trade policies and discuss how federal, regional and local programs for agricultural research, inspection, trade promotion and resource conservation help ensure U.S. agricultural competitiveness in the global marketplace. Title: Promoting Tolerance through the Arts Dates: August 16 ) September 3, 2010 Program Team: Susan Lockwood/Sequita Robinson This multi-regional project, designed for artists; teachers; youth leaders; arts officials active in museums, theater, dance or music; and journalists involved in promoting the arts and culture through their writing, will examine the arts and artistic expression in the United States as a vehicle for promoting tolerance in communities. Visits to both established art centers as well as to smaller, community-supported arts projects will help to illustrate the various ways in which the arts can convey identity, creativity, belief systems, as well as the diversity and tolerance that are the hallmark of America. NEW: Title: Sustainable Urban Development in the U.S. Dates: August 23 ) September 10, 2010 Program Team: Marion Lange/Azza Zaki This project for city planners, architects and NGO stakeholders will explore sustainable approaches to urban concerns such as air and water pollution, sanitation and waste management, transportation, and provision of water, electricity and other utilities. Participants will examine how the use of renewable energy sources and improvements in energy efficiency can lower costs and mitigate environmental degradation, and how environmental factors have become a major consideration in city planning in the U.S. Title: Organized Labor in the U.S. Dates: August 23 ) September 10, 2010 Program Team: Isabelle Zsoldos/Sequita Robinson This multi-regional project, designed for labor leaders, economic journalists, government officials, elected officials and academicians who have professional responsibilities relating to labor issues, will examine the impact of the American labor movement on U.S. foreign, domestic and international economic policies and provide an understanding of the origins, history, operation and role of organized labor in American society and the development of workers rights. Participants will be introduced to the relationship between management and labor in the public and private sectors and the role of labor in the political, economic and social systems at the federal, state, and local levels. NEW: Title: Changing Demographics and Multi-Culturalism in the U.S. Dates: September 7 ) 24, 2010 Program Team: Janice Brummond/Azza Zaki Every ten years the United States conducts a nation-wide census. Revealing the cultural, economic and social diversity of the United States, the U.S. Census influences public policy decisions and allocations of government resources. This multi-regional program will study how the 2010 U.S. Census and other public policy tools are used to translate demographic changes within communities into evolving political, social, economic, educational, and health systems in the U.S. This project is designed for government officials, academics, journalists, and representatives of non-governmental organizations addressing the challenges of planning for and providing public services to increasingly diverse populations. Title: Accountability in Government and Business Dates: September 13 ) October 1, 2010 Program Team: Susan Lockwood/Sequita Robinson This multi-regional project, designed for government officials, business leaders, politicians, civic and community leaders, journalists and educators will explore transparency and ethics in government and issues of corporate responsibility in the U.S. Participants will learn the methods applied by the public and private sectors to prevent corruption, encourage transparency, and ensure accountability and responsibility of business in society, ethical leadership, ethical decision making, and corporate governance. NEW: Title: Biodiversity Education and Awareness in the U.S. Dates: September 20 ) October 8, 2010 Program Team: Marion Lange/Azza Zaki Preparing good stewards of our shared environment is critical to protecting the planet's variety of life, biodiversity, for future generations. This MRP will emphasize the importance of formal and informal environmental education and public awareness efforts in biodiversity conservation. Participants will examine curriculum development and implementation in schools (K-12) and institutions of higher education, including community-based outreach efforts. The project also will assess the biodiversity conservation programs of non-governmental organizations and their engagement with policy-makers and the general public. This project is designed for environmental educators, journalists and representatives of non-governmental organizations. Title: U.S. Foreign Policy and Human Rights Issues (2 weeks) Dates: September 20 ) October 1, 2010 Program Team: Isabelle Zsoldos/Sequita Robinson This 2-week multi-regional project, designed for government officials, foreign policy analysts and decision-makers, politicians, NGO activists, and scholars and journalists interested in human rights, will examine the human rights component of U.S. foreign policy and explore the public and private organizations that address human rights issues. The program will introduce various non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that champion human rights and the ways that they bring their agendas to the attention of local and national leaders to influence human rights policy at the federal, state and local levels. 4.
