Copies of all scholarships are available in the guidance office or to be sent to the student’s home or email. SunTrust Off To College Scholarship Sweepstakes High school seniors can win a $1,000 scholarship for their first year expenses at a college or private career school. One winner will be chosen every two weeks through May 15, 2009. Award: $1,000 for your first year of college Apply: Enter sweepstakes by registering at www.offtocollege.info or www.suntrusteducation.com. Only one entry per person for each drawing, however students can register after each drawing for the next scheduled drawing. No purchase necessary to enter or win. Deadlines: (all Fridays) April 10 & 24, 2009 Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship Recognizes exceptionally able high school seniors who show promise of continues excellence in postsecondary education. Award: $1,500 Apply: Pick up an application packet in the guidance office. Must be nominated by the school system. Deadline: Friday, April 10th, 2009 URW Community Federal Credit Union Scholarship Awarded to high school seniors graduating in 2009 who will continue on to an accredited college (or recognized institution of higher learning) and who have been a member of URW for the past twelve months prior to applying. Award: five of $500 Apply: Request an application in guidance. Deadline: Friday, April 17th, 2009 Builders & Associates of Southern Virginia Area builders and suppliers are aware of the costs of higher education. This awareness, coupled with local needs for an educated workforce, has resulted in the creation of a scholarship fund. Award: five of $1,000 Apply: Request an application in guidance. Note: There is no specific field in which a student must major. Deadline: Friday, April 24th, 2009 Ayn Rand's The Fountainhead Essay Contest, Ayn Rand Institute An essay contest on Ayn Rand's novel The Fountainhead, which "is about architect Howard Roark, a man denounced by society for his unconventional style and creative ability." Award: Prizes: 1st: $10,000, 2nd (5): $2,000, 3rd (10): $1,000, Finalist (45): $100, Semifinalist (175): $50 Apply: Choose one of three topics as listed on the website (also available in the guidance office) and submit your essay online or by mail to Fountainhead Essay Contest, The Ayn Rand Institute, P.O. Clyde W. Morris Memorial Scholarship, Virginia Association for Public Transportation Awarded to a Virginia public school senior who is a child or grandchild of any public school pupil transportation employee in the Commonwealth and who is continuing their education beyond the secondary level. Award: $2,500 Apply: Mail in paper copy (come to guidance for a copy). More information will be posted when the 2009 application is posted to the VAPT website. Deadline: Thursday, April 30th, 2009 Buster Bynam Scholarship, Southeastern States Pupil Transportation Conference, VAPT Awarded to two Virginia public school senior who is a child or grandchild of any public school pupil transportation employee in the Commonwealth and who is continuing their education beyond the secondary level. Deadline: Thursday, April 30th, 2009 Schering-Plough “Will to Win” Scholarship Program Awarded to high school seniors with asthma who will graduate in 2009 and has achieved a level of excellence in one of the following: performing arts, community services, athletics, visual arts or science. Must be attending college in fall 2009. Award: $5,000 will be awarded to ten students (two per category) Apply: Mail in paper copy (come to guidance for a copy). Deadline: Thursday, April 30th, 2009 Write-A-Greeting-Card Scholarship Contest Awarded to the high school student who writes the best greeting card explaining why we should use renewable energy and/or protect the environment to a very special recipient: President Obama! Award: Top 100 entries will be sent to the President of the United States; winner will receive the experience of a lifetime by joining the “Foxtrot” fleet for Sail Caribbean’s marine-based environmental service program in the Caribbean. Adventures include hands-on learning to protect and preserve the environment along with outdoor exploration, sailing, water sports, and snorkeling. Apply: Online where you must upload a 250-word essay. Deadline: Thursday, April 30th, 2009 Virginia Athletic Trainers Association Awarded to two students who intend to study Athletic Training. Award: $1,000 for the winner and $500 to the first runner-up Apply: Online or by paper (come to guidance for a copy).
