Learning to read rhythms is way easier than you might think. In this PDF I’ll show you the basics of reading rhythms.
Downstrokes and Up Strokes
Ok, so ﬁrst you need to know what a downstroke and an upstroke looks like.
A down stroke looks like this:
An upstroke looks like this:

TIP: Count along and TAP your foot. Use a metronome where possible.

These rhythms will help you get into the swing of things so to speak. Tap your foot along with these
rhythms. When your hand goes down your foot will tap on the ﬂoor. When your hand goes up your foot
should be in the air. Also make sure you count out loud as your playing. All the downstrokes will be on
the Beat e.g. 1, 2, 3, 4. The upstrokes will be counted as “and” e.g. 1 and 2 and 3 and 4.
