                          2009 Burdell’s Best Awards
                                                        Guidelines for Applications

NOTE: It is mandatory that we receive electronic copies of all submissions. All files need to be converted to pdf format.

1.   The deadline for applications to be received is March 30, 2009 at 5:00 PM. Please e-mail completed applications to Andrea Trillo, Chair of
     Burdell’s Best Awards, at a.trillo@gatech.edu.

2. An organization may not win the same award in consecutive years. If you are not sure if your organization has won the same award
   before, please check the web page: http://cyberbuzz.gatech.edu/prescouncil.

3. New organizations may not apply for or win the “Most Improved Organization” award. An organization is considered “new” it was
   chartered on or after January 1, 2008.

4. Please be sure to include the following information on your application:

             Name of organization & advisor
             Name of contact person with email address & phone number
             Name of award for which you are applying
             Name of activity/URL/etc when applicable
             Date of submission

5. Please limit your application submissions to three pages or less. This limit doesn’t include supplemental material such as photos.
   Submitting pictures, videos, etc. of your events is encouraged. Note that these may be used in the Awards Ceremony.

6. An activity submitted for consideration as “Best Joint Activity” should be one in which the sponsoring societies are NOT likely to
   collaborate on a regular basis (e.g. NOT a professional and honor society in the same major).

7.   The questions should be used as a GUIDE when completing the application. You don’t have to answer these questions in the order that they
     appear. BE CREATIVE!!! If supporting documents are to be included, please attach them electronically.

8. Organizations can apply for as many awards as they are eligible for, however, organizations will be awarded no more than two awards
   during a given year.

Awards will be announced at the Up With the White and Gold Ceremony on April 20, 2009. Please encourage all of your members to attend this
exciting event!

NOTE: Please read the GUIDELINES page before completing your application. Include specific examples for clarification and enhancement. The
“Organization of the Year” award will be determined by simple majority of all the Presidents. Deadline is March 30, 2009 at 5pm.

Most Improved Organization
Note: Organization must have existed longer than one year on campus.
 Provide statistics on and discuss how your group has addressed and risen to challenges of membership growth and member and officer
    turnover.
 What difficulties (founding, participation, etc.) has your organization overcome within the past year? What sets your group apart from
    other groups in these areas?
 How did your organization react to changes implemented to improve your organization?
 How has your organization utilized its resources and talents to collaborate with other organizations?
 How has your organization improved beyond membership growth/retention?

Best New Organization
Note: Considered new if chartered on or after January 1, 2008.
 What void did you see on campus that necessitated the creation/establishment of your organization, and how did your organization fill that
    void?
 What challenges did you face in establishing and recruiting for this organization, and how did you circumvent or deal with those
    challenges?
 How does your organization seek to impact Tech in the future (specific goals, both definition of and plan for implementation)?
 How has your group dealt with officer/membership development and collaboration with other organizations?

Most Organizational Spirit
   How does your organization present itself to the rest of the Georgia Tech campus?
   Does your organization hold or participate in “spirit” events (an annual celebration for the organization, whether local or national;
    parades, rallies, t-shirt or hat day, etc.) or “team events” (tournaments, intramurals, etc.)? How does this involvement translate into
    organizational spirit?
   Describe a time where your organization exhibited and boosted its pride, spirit or visibility. How did this affect the general attitude of the
    Tech community?

   How has your organization utilized its resources and talents to collaborate with other organizations?


Best On-Going Service Project & Best Short Term Service Project
   Name the project and give the date of its inception (On-going means regular participation for at least 2 months).
   How has this project impacted your group? The student body? Tech as a whole? The community?
   How has this project impacted your relations with the organization for which service is being done, between Tech and the organization, or
    among members of your organization?
   How has this project affected the ways in which others see your group and its activities?

Best Activity & Best Joint Activity
Note: The joint activity must have involved only established Georgia Tech organizations.
 Briefly, name the event and give dates and locations (not an agenda or a calendar of events).
 How has this event/project impacted your group? The student body? Tech as a whole?
 What was the response/feedback from the community/campus to your project? How many people actually participated?
 If you do this activity again, what will you do to improve the project and the results?

 How can this activity be used to promote the goals of communication and collaboration on campus?
 Do you plan to pursue further projects with the group with which you collaborated or another group?

Outstanding Campus Impact
   Name events and give dates and locations (not an agenda or a calendar of events).
   What activities has your organization initiated that have effected a major positive change on campus?
   How has this project affected the ways in which others see your group and its activities?
   Will your organization do this or similar projects again? If so, how will the projects be improved to increase its impact?
   How has your organization utilized its talents and resources to collaborate with other organizations?

Best Internet Presence
   Please list your organization’s URL/listserve/newsgroup
   How does your website increase the effectiveness of your organization, and complement other Internet resources relating to the nature of
    your organization?
   How and how often are your Internet tools utilized by group members or others?
   How has your organization utilized its resources and talents to collaborate with other organizations?

Most Creative Fundraiser
   Briefly, name event and give dates and locations (not an agenda or calendar of events).
   What was the reason for the fundraiser? How much did you raise?
   How has this event/project impacted your group? The student body? Tech as a whole?
   How has this project affected the ways in which others see your group and its activities?


Most Outstanding Faculty/Staff Advisor
   Briefly explain what contributions the Faculty/Staff Advisor has made to your organization and its leadership development.
   Describe the relationship between your Faculty/Staff Advisor and the organization membership. Does the advisor attend and participate
    actively in activities, functions and meetings and is he/she accessible or available to members and officers?
   What is the most important thing that your organization has learned form your Faculty/Staff Advisor?
