FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Feb Arlington Va DISA DEVELOPS NEW

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Feb. 5, 2009 Arlington, Va. DISA DEVELOPS NEW OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARE Arlington, Va. – A new but proven collaborative software development capability is now available for limited use within the Department of Defense. The Defense Information Systems Agency’s Forge.mil creates a new approach to delivering and deploying technology within the DoD. Forge.mil capitalizes on concepts proven in open source software development that have already reaped tremendous benefits for software and technology development communities. It’s a collaborative approach that enables rapid innovation to accelerate delivery of dependable software, services and systems to support net-centric operations and warfare. Along with accelerating technology development, Forge.mil will also enable early and continuous collaboration and information-sharing among all stakeholders in a secure development environment. "We need Forge.mil because existing system development approaches don't meet the needs of our net-centric environment in terms of speed and agility," said David Mihelcic, DISA's Chief Technology Officer. "With Forge.mil, we can get solutions out to the field far faster and with greater capabilities than currently possible using our traditional systems development approaches." With Forge.mil, DISA also breaks traditional development approaches by employing net-centricity principles such as collaboration, information sharing, shared situational awareness, and self-synchronization within DoD’s IT acquisition arena. Not only benefiting developers, Forge.mil also lets customers choose what best fits their unique needs from competing products and services, providing best-value services within a limited defense budget. Customers are already realizing the benefits of Forge.mil by downloading software such as DoD Bastille which automates the configuration and security lock-down of Linux operating systems, Forge.mil and RACE are two key components of DISA’s move to provide cloud computing services. Together they provide unique capabilities to accelerate DoD technology development, RACE providing a rapidly deployable hardware environment and Forge.mil providing the supporting software development environment. RACE provides Forge.mil users and customers with a secure, flexible, and scalable software ecosystem that’s the future of DoD IT infrastructure. ### DISA is a Department of Defense combat support agency and provides real-time information technology and communications support to the President, Vice President, Secretary of Defense, the military Services, and the Combatant Commands.
