Mercer Arboretum & Botanic Gardens
Spring 2009 Programs Schedule
Mercer Arboretum & Botanic Gardens, a Harris County Precinct 4 facility under the
leadership of Commissioner Jerry Eversole, is located at 22306 Aldine Westfield Road, one mile
north of FM 1960. Harris County Precinct 4 programs serve people of all ages regardless of
socioeconomic level, race, sex, religion, national origin, or physical ability. Anyone requiring
special assistance to participate in any program, or to obtain additional information, should

March Mart Gardening Series: Shade/Trees and Shrubs. Tue., Feb. 17 from 10 a.m. to noon.
Join this special gardening series that leads up to the annual March Mart plant sale. These
lectures will focus on selected March Mart categories and how they fit into the local landscape.
Special attention will be paid to plants available at the sale. Please call ahead for reservations.
March Mart Gardening Series: Natives/Annuals and Perennials. Tue., Feb. 24 from 10 a.m.
to noon. This is the second of four special gardening lectures that lead up to the March Mart
plant sale.

March Mart Gardening Series: Gingers/Tropicals. Tue., Mar. 3 from 10 a.m. to noon. This is
the third of four special gardening lectures that lead up to the annual March Mart plant sale.
Gingers and tropical species will be the focus of this lecture, how they fit into the local
landscape, and the plants that will be available at the sale. Please call ahead for reservations.
Continuing Education: Climbing Roses. Tue., Mar. 10 from 10 a.m. to noon. Join Mike Shoup
of the Antique Rose Emporium to learn about these wonderful plants that are perfect for vertical
spaces and adding colorful height to the garden. Please call ahead for reservations.
Lunch Bunch: March Mart Preview. Wed., Mar. 11 from noon to 2 p.m. Get a sneak peek of
the great new plants and reliable favorites available for sale at March Mart. (No plants will be for
sale at the preview.) Bring a sack lunch to enjoy during the program. Please call ahead for
reservations.

Join this final session of the special gardening series that leads up to the March Mart plant sale.
This lectures focuses on selected vines, vegetables, and herbs that will be available at March
Mart, plus how these species fit into the local landscape. Please call ahead for reservations.

March Mart Plant Sale. Fri. and Sat., Mar. 27 and 28 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Plan to attend this
area’s largest plant sale! Enjoy shopping for plants from categories such as trees and shrubs,
tropicals, natives, gingers, shade plants, vines, vegetables, annuals and perennials, herbs, roses,
and a new addition: succulent plants. Bring a wagon and green thumb!

Lunch Bunch: Plant and Insect Interactions. Wed., Apr. 8 from noon to 2 p.m. Discover how
plants defend against and take advantage of insects and why the best defense is sometimes a
good offense. Bring a sack lunch to enjoy during the program. Please call ahead for reservations.
Continuing Education: Creating Vignettes with Containers. Tue., Apr. 21 from 10 a.m. to
noon. Join Darnell Schreiber to discover how to create visual impact through container
gardening. Learn how to select plants and personalize your garden to create vignettes that serve
as a focal point and instantly beautify any area. Please call ahead for reservations.

Lunch Bunch: Poisonous Plants. Wed., May 13 from noon to 2 p.m. Local garden author and
naturalist Karen Breneman shares information about poisonous plants and how to recognize
them. Bring a sack lunch to enjoy. Please call ahead for reservations.
Bromeliad Society Show and Sale. Fri., May 15, noon to 5 p.m. (sale); Sat., May 16, 2 p.m. to 5
p.m. (show), and 9 a.m.-5 p.m. (sale); Sun., May 17, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. (show), 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
(sale). Join the Bromeliad Society/Houston for their annual show and sale. See beautiful plants
on display, learn about cultivation from experts, and purchase a plant for your home.
Continuing Education: Sizzling Plants for Summer. Tue., May 19 from 10 a.m. to noon. Find
out what’s hot in the garden this summer and take a walking tour of the grounds. Please call

Ongoing
Bird Walk: Second Saturday of each month from 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Take a guided walk
through Mercer to discover the abundant bird life of the park. Bring binoculars, water, and
comfortable walking shoes.
Mercer Bamboo Meetings: Fourth Saturday of each month from 9 a.m. to noon. Monthly
meetings feature hands-on training in Mercer’s bamboo garden. Bring a sack lunch to enjoy. Call
to confirm meeting times for the month.
Piney Woods Wildlife Society: Third Tuesday of each month from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. This
nonprofit organization is dedicated to the study of birds and other wildlife, and protecting the
environment.
Chrysanthemum Society: Fourth Friday of each month from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. These
monthly meetings include discussions about growing chrysanthemums and floral arranging. The
society also provides plants for Mercer’s collection. Call (281) 443-8731 for more information.
