Sarah Weidner, Lacey Rucker, and Katie Eggers at Teen Conference
LOCAL YOUTH MAKE A DIFFERENCE AT STATE 4-H TEEN CONFERENCE COLUMBIA, Mo. – Three members of Livingston County 4-H were among the 300 youth delegates attending the 2009 Missouri 4-H Teen Conference January 31st and February 1st at Stoney Creek Inn in Columbia. Lacey participated in workshops on Etiquette, Leadership Skills 101, Move Across Missouri and Global Education opportunities. Katie and Sarah were integral parts of facilitating the event. 4-H Teen Conference delegates took part in a “silver rush,” donating coins for the Kids Helping Kids fund. This fund is used to assist 4-H families who are experiencing hardship due to natural disasters or other unforeseen circumstances. The conference ended on a high note with a session on “Becoming A Better You,” featuring Lacy Fitzgerald, Miss Missouri. The 4-H Teen Conference is planned and facilitated by the older teens of the Missouri State 4-H Council, like Sarah and Katie, with assistance from State and local 4-H staff. In addition to the strong educational components, this annual conference seeks to inform youth about the many 4-H opportunities that await them as teenagers. For more information about 4-H, visit www.extension.missouri.edu/livingston, or contact your local Extension Center at 660-646-0811.

Government Day
Here is a new opportunity for youth ages 13 and up (4-H age) to not only learn about government, but to experience government. Youth will be able to meet with city officials including mayor, take on the role of a city official and hold a “mock” council meeting, meet with State Representative Mike Lair, and to experience other aspects of government. The idea is to empower youth to be active in our city, county and state government—you have a voice! At the end of the session, youth will develop a community improvement concept and a panel of officials will choose 3 proposals to receive cash awards to get started on these projects (awards of $100, $75, $50). Then youth will complete the project at home and report on how their efforts have improved their community. This opportunity is open to all area 4-H youth. Place the various sizes of ice in a large container. Ask the children if they’ve ever slipped on the ice. What types of things do people use to make it safer to walk on the ice? Let the children predict, based on their past experiences, what will happen if they pour rock salt on top of the ice. Then, let them try it. What happens? Use the rock salt to make tunnels and different designs in the ice.
