The Microsoft® Solution Accelerator for Business Desktop Deployment (BDD) provide s the guidance and tools
required to efficiently ma nage the deployment of Microsoft Windo ws Vista™ and Microsoft Office Professional Edition
2007. BDD 2007 will consist of two primary solutions: BDD 2007 Standard Edition and BDD 2007 Enterprise Edition.
Both are part of the Microsoft Solutions for Management suite of solutio n accelerator offerings. They utilize the robust
deployment tools in Microsoft Windo ws Vista,, combined with real-world experience and guidance, to create an end-
to-end solution for migrating and deploying desktops. The BDD 2007 Beta 1 is available on Microsoft Connect
(http://connect..microsoft.com) as an open beta to partners and customers and enables acceleration and cost
reduction associated with deployment projects. The release versions of BDD 2007 will be available to coincide with the
release of Microsoft Windows Vista on the Microsoft Download Center (http://www.microsoft.com/do wnloads).
What are the key BDD Messages?
1. Microsoft is committed to eliminating hurdles and reducing the costs customers experience with desktop
deployment, application compa tibility, and desktop life cycle management. New deployment tools and resources
have enabled partners and customers to deploy Windows XP and Office 2003 for under $100 (on average) per
desktop, a savings of up to $250 per desktop.
2. The next generation of the Solutio n Accelerator for Business Desktop Deployment provides an end-to-end
solution for the efficient planning, building, and deploying of Windows Vista and Office 2007. The Enterprise
Edition of the BDD solution accelerator will offer Zero Touch deployment using Microsoft Systems Management
Server 2003 Operating System Deployment Feature Pack Update, thereby eliminating the need for a technicia n to
be on-site to deploy the desktop.
3. A suite of new and enha nced deployment tools is now available in the Windows Vista operating system that
enables businesses to deploy Windows Vista and Office 2007 desktops more easily than ever, resulting in reduced

What is the difference between BDD 2007 Standard Edition and BDD 2007 Enterprise Edition?
The BDD 2007 Sta ndard Edition has been updated from previous BDD Standard Edition releases . As with previous
releases, it requires a minimum set of tools and assumes that the environment does not have systems management
utilities, directory services, or deployment servers in place. The BDD Enterprise Edition, on the other hand, is a highly
automated zero touch solutio n tha t requires a Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 and Microsoft
Active Directory® environment for deployment. BDD 2007 Standard Edition has been updated to use most of the
same tools and procedures as found in the coming BDD 2007 Enterprise Edition. The unified architecture makes it

Are there technology constraints to BDD 2007?
By design, there are very few. With the BDD Standard Edition, Microsoft does not assume that any network
management system or specific deployment servers already exist within the organizatio n.
Will users lose all data and settings that they currently have on their computers?
No. BDD 2007 provides detailed, best-practice guidance about user state migratio n and employs the User State
Migration Tool 3.0 to migrate the desired settings and attributes to the new desktop.
Does BDD 2007 Standard Edition Beta 1 support deployment of Windows XP Professional with
Service Pack 2?
No. This Beta release only supports deployment of the Windows Vista operating system. BDD 2007 Standard and
Enterprise Editions will support deployment of Windo ws XP SP2 when it is released to the Microsoft Download Center.
How do I get Windows PE 2.0?
Windo ws PE 2.0 is available as part of the Windo ws Vista operating system (boot.wim). It is also available separately in
the Windows Auto mated Ins tallatio n Kit (Windows AIK), which includes Windows PE for each platform (ia64, x64, x86)
and tools to customize it using Windows System Image Manager and Windows Deployment Services.
What tools are used in the BDD solutions for imaging?
The BDD 2007 Sta ndard Edition uses the new BDDWorkbench, which is built on Windows Vista deployment tools
including: ImageX, System Image Manager, Windows PE 2.0, and Windows Deployment Services.
Does BDD 2007 address security for the business desktop?
BDD 2007 helps companies understand how security policies affect the design of desktop images and also discuss
strategies for hardening of the desktop. However, BDD is not intended to replace specific desktop security solutio ns.
