Connection Newsletter for the UW-Whitewater/Community Optimist Club Connecting Campus and Community Check us out online: http://www.uww.edu/uwwoptimists Volume 16, Number 3 Southern Wisconsin District December 2006 A Message from Club President Kim Happy New Year Fellow Optimists! I hope you all had safe, happy and healthy holidays! This late December / early January newsletter reflects all the wonderful projects our club sponsored in December. As you can see from the photos, we had a very full month of great activities. Thanks to all who helped out in small, medium and big ways. Our next kid – focused events are the Academic Decathlon and the ice fishing derby at Tripp Lake -- although I think we’ll need a couple of pontoon boats instead. Thanks to Maggie for continuing to put together our newsletter – and thanks to Dick and Maggie and four student optimists who are currently working hard in Bay St. Louis! We’ll look forward to hearing more incredible stories. -1Congratulations to our December Youths of the Month: Armando Sandoval and Anna Talpe! Connection The bidding is over! Congratulations and thanks go to Hans Hahn! He bid $200 for the signed Brett Favre photo donated by the Winzes. The money will be used to support youth activities in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, which is rebuilding after Hurricane Katrina. Members present: Frank Bartlett, Barb Dickens, Dune Dickens, Wes Therrian, Tom Hinspater, Lou Zahn. Members absent: Jim Miller, Bob Barry. Approval of Minutes: The minutes of the November 13 Board meeting were reviewed. On a motion by Therrian/D. Dickens, the Minutes were approved unanimously. Treasurer’s Report: Bartlett presented the Treasurer’s Report and noted the following: Total income for the month was $,007.22; expenses were $1,927.23. District and international dues were both paid for this quarter. Total programmable funding is at $16,608 (checking and savings). A dues report was also presented. Bartlett will send another reminder to those in arrears. Bartlett has not heard from the auditor regarding the annual review. Adams presented two checks for deposit: Football Craze and SWIS District. Bartlett presented the paperwork he received in order to request a debit card for the Club. It was agreed that Bartlett would have the card in his name and members could request usage as needed. On a motion by Dickens, second by Zahn, the Treasurer’s Report was approved unanimously. -8- Connection Old Business: The life member correction for a former awardee whose paperwork had not been properly submitted will be brought to the Club for discussion and vote on Tuesday, 12/5. If approved by the Club, Zahn will submit appropriate information to OI. Adams directed Bartlett to submit a check to the Whitewater Middle School for the Club-approved $350.00 donation for the Disney Science Trip. Adams has received approval for the Club to have a wall-mounted storage unit in the storage room off of Esker 108. Therrian will investigate appropriate units and report back. Clarification of the intent of the donations for the Favre email auction was discussed. The Board agreed that the Winz’ would be the most appropriate members to decide where the donation would be put to best use. Fundraising Requests/Opportunities: Adams received no requests for funding since last month. The Deer Widows event was discussed. There has not been a concerted effort in the last several years with the event which had previously been well-attended and anticipated by community members. Dickens suggested that he and Therrian assist the Student Optimist Club in helping to promote and organize. Adams suggested collaboration would be a good idea so that some funds from the event could be directed to our Club. Adams will share ideas with the Student club. Adams reminded Board members that a chair is needed for our 2007 KMOR ride. Culler will assist but has declined to chair the event again. Membership Updates: There are no additions or deletions from the membership at this time. A NOW meeting is being planned for January 30 in conjunction with a fellowship meeting. Calendar/Project Updates: No report. Student Optimist Club: The Student Club is ending there year with many activities. They will assist with Breakfast with Santa, complete their popcorn fundraising event, go caroling, and have a year end party at Adams’ house. Announcements: There is no meeting on December 26. Adjourn: On a Therrian/Dickens motion, the meeting was adjourned at 4:55pm. -9- Connection “Each Optimist member serves 32 kids in their community.” -Don Damon Promise yourself to look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true.
