BSIM1001 Professional Experience (PE) 1 Assignment Due date: 31 July 2007 In addition to the workplace supervisor’s evaluation on your work performance, each student will be assessed by two tasks: (1) a blog that keeps track of your experience in the workplace; and (2) a portfolio documenting your learning experience in PE1. Different students may start their PE1 at different dates, but the duration for PE1 should be no less than 80 hours. PE2 lasts from one month (full-time) to three months depending on the negotiation between you and your receiving organizations. 1. Blogging Students should form an online community during the PE period to share their PE experience and to support one another by making constructive comments to their classmates’ postings. 1.1 Introduction Each student is expected to enter his/her reflection from PE1 into the blog every one or two days. In addition, he/she should post a minimum of 1-2 comments to their classmates’ blogs every week. Lecturers will review the blogs periodically. 2. Portfolio By the end of your PE1, you should create at least 6-8 blog postings, which will be useful for you to prepare for your portfolio that is described in the following sessions. 2.1 Learning objectives At the end of this exercise, you should be able to: • Reflect critically on the nature of information at work • Apply established information models to the workplace • Reflect on aspects of organisational behaviour • Identify areas of development (technical or others) from a personal perspective 2.2 Format & content The portfolio should be a structured, systematic observation and reflection of: • What you have learned during Professional Experience • How you have contributed to the host organization It should involve factual descriptions and your own analysis of what you have experienced. The portfolio can be arranged in a variety of ways, for example: • By date • By task/topic • Any other logical arrangement However it is arranged, it should be in a coherent form with logical section headings and linkages. It should include (but not be limited to): ① An introduction to the host organization with some overall factual description (eg size, nature of their business etc). Include: • A brief statement of the organization’s mission and goals • An organization chart • A brief description of the functions of the division/department to which you are assigned ② A detailed description of the nature of your work. Include: • The nature and goals of the project(s) that you worked on, including flowcharts, WBS, AONs etc., where appropriate. • The value of the project(s) from the perspective of information management within the organization, i.e. what improvements in information flow result from the project(s). • Your role in the project(s). • The nature of skills required in order to perform your role. ③ Discussion of the application of standard IM models such as the Information Management Cycle, the Records Lifecycle etc, to the activities in which you are involved

in or witness. Identify any informational problems you experienced and diagnose them according to established models. ④ Reflecting and sharing of personal experience learnt from PE. This should cover both task based activities (e.g., use of IT, tasks requiring you to learn new skills, etc) and other organizational observations (e.g., group interaction, workplace communication, etc). Provide examples, using description, flowcharts, WBS, mind maps, graphics etc, to document and support your observations. Note any new skills learned and the application of skills that you had previously learned during the BSc[IM] and/or earlier studies during the PE period. Include your feelings about the way things are done, your own assessment of your performance, what you like (and don’t like) doing, etc. We recommend that you start recording information from day 1 (or even before commencement) and build it up throughout your Professional Experience. 2.3 Referencing Provide references according to APA style to any published or unpublished documents (e.g. the organizations annual report), pamphlets or web pages that you have used. 2.4 Length About 2000 words 2.5 Submission Upload to ILN and provide a printed copy to the Faculty General Office
