School bus safety is very important to know. Here are some safety tips when riding the bus to school. Be at the school bus on time. Wait in a safe place back from the edge of the road. Do not play on ditches or snow banks. Enter the bus in a single file holding the rail. Find a seat right away and stay seated facing forward at all times. Do not place things in the aisle. Keep your arms and head inside the bus. Always follow the bus drivers instructions. When leaving the bus, move away from the side. If you drop something near the bus, never try to pick it up. Ask an adult or the bus driver for help.

When crossing the street to get on or off the bus: Walk at least 10 big steps in front of the bus, along the side of the road and look at the driver for a signal before crossing. Look all ways before crossing the road. Walk, never run, to where your parent or caregiver is waiting for you on the side of the road by the bus stop.
Why are school buses yellow?
» Did you ever wonder why school buses are yellow? They are painted a “yellow-orange” color(officially known as “National School Bus Chrome Yellow”) for purposes of visibility and safety. The color was selected because the black lettering was the easiest to see on the color yellow in the early morning. Yellow also gets your attention faster then any other color on the road. If there is bad weather, drivers will be able to see yellow buses on the road.
