FLAG AND TOUCH FOOTBALL STUDY SHEETS 1. OBJECT : To advance the ball over the opponent’s goal line. 2. POSITIONS AND GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES A. OFFENSE: a. Linemen  Center: Hikes the ball and blocks for a run or pass protection  Tackle and Guards: Blocking and pass protection  Ends: Blockers on runs and receivers on pass plays b. Backfield  Quarterback: Usually receives the snap from the center and then runs, passes or hands off to another player  Halfbacks and Fullbacks: Ball carriers or pass receivers who line up behind the linemen B. DEFENSE: a. Linemen: Attempt to tackle ball carrier and/or put pressure on pass b. Backfield: Attempt to nullify or intercept passes and/or tackle runner if he gets beyond the defensive line 3. TACKLING A. Touch Football: Touch ball carrier with 1 or 2 hands. B. Flag Football: Remove 1 flag from ball carrier. Belt Placement: Flag must be on both sides of each player Taking flag off early by defensive tackle can only be made on removing flags; if both flags were taken off, play becomes automatic touchdown or conversion point. If offense loses flag, player is automatically tackled when he receives ball. 4. PENALTIES A. Illegal Block: 5 yards- block must be made with hands on chest and contact made above the waist. B. Offsides: 5 yards-when defense advances over scrimmage line before the ball is hiked. C. Illegal Procedure: 5 yards- when offensive team advances before the ball is hiked. D. Clipping: 15 yards-blocking or hitting a player from behind. E. Pass Interference: by offense-loss of down plus 5 yards by defense-automatic 1st down at point of infraction F. Unsportsmanlike Conduct: 15 yards-kicking, pushing, tripping, holding, swearing G. Roughing Kicker and/or Illegal Block of Kick: 1st down 5. TERMS A. Hiking: Act of tossing the football through your legs or side stance to a player in the backfield. Command “hike” by offense does not allow defense to legally advance. They may advance only after the ball is snapped from the center. B. Eligible Receiver: everyone is eligible for a pass unless otherwise told. C. Fumble: Other than a pass, when the ball touches the ground (ball is dead at that instance) TERMS (CONTINUED) D. Kickoff: To start the game or after points have been scored; ball is placed on the ground at designated spot. E. Forward Pass: Ball is thrown from behind the line of scrimmage, going in the direction of the scrimmage line. F. Lateral: Ball is thrown or tossed from anywhere, but does not advance the ball toward the goal line. G. Punt Line Up: A player one arm length away on each side of the punter: defense must come from around and behind posts to tackle the punter. H. First Down: 2 completed passes (they do not have to be in succession). I. Scrimmage Line: Imaginary line going across the field from where each play begins. J. Goal Line: The line near the end of the field that the ball must cross over for a touchdown, safety, touchback or conversion. K. End Zone: Area beyond the goal line and to end of the field. L. Touchdown: 6 points-when the offense advances the ball over the opponent’s goal line. M. Touchback: When the team receives the ball in the end zone from a kickoff, punt, or intercepted pass and they decide not to advance the ball. N. Safety: 2 points-the offense is tackled in their own end zone. O. Conversion: Extra point(s) scored after a touchdown. 2 points-if run in from 3 yards back 1 point-if passed from 3 yards back 6.
