Welcome to the 2007 Meeting!
We trust that this conference will be the occasion for inspiration and insight as we collectively consider the many possibilities of case research, writing and teaching. The meeting will focus on a broad array of new case studies in various stages of development. From my perch as VP Programs, I have the opportunity to see the impressive variety of topics and the compelling story-lines that cross a wide range of disciplinary interests. This work is testimony to our membership’s engagement in the world and its dedication to the craft of case writing. Year after year, the NACRA meeting provides several ways to stimulate new case research. Our case roundtables continue to be the organizing principle. We also invite newcomers to attend pre-conference sessions. And then we have a nice complement of case embryos, where authors with early-stage ideas receive individualized advice and coaching. This year is no different and we expect to be discussing over 100 new cases in the roundtable sessions and advising the authors of over two dozen embryo cases. This year we have also signaled a theme for the annual meeting, namely, “New Directions in Case Study.” Let me offer a few highlights: • Our plenary session on Thursday considers how case studies are being integrated into innovative curricular designs. • On Friday, we’ll hear from Bill Ellet, the author of The Case Study Handbook. • Concurrent sessions on Friday afternoon will offer a great opportunity to broaden your perspective: “Can’t Miss Cases,” the development and distribution of multimedia cases, new research topics, “live” cases, and more. • At Saturday’s luncheon, we’ll recognize some of the best new work with a full slate of NACRA awards. I want to conclude by thanking the many people who worked with me. Let me begin with the track chairs, who do all the “heavy-lifting”—recruitment, reviews, communications, and other preparations—required to set the stage. Among those track chairs was Marlene Reed, who also organized the pre-conference activities and then laid the groundwork for our next conference in New Hampshire. The Executive Committee works throughout the year on various aspects of this meeting. Many have themselves chaired the program, most recently, Mike Welsh and Debbie Ettington. They generously shared their experience and advice. Likewise, Bob Crowner, our treasurer, brought a sure hand and keen eye to the many details connected with registration and finances. This year, as in years past, Pat Holman and Tom Hinthorne have done outstanding work in assembling our Proceedings. I want also to thank Cindy Gerontes, who has assisted me at Saint Louis University in planning and preparing for this conference. Finally, let me extend heartfelt thanks to you, the members of NACRA, for joining this association, for sharing your work, and for participating in this conference.
Jim Fisher

Multimedia Cases: Development & Distribution
Moderators: Jane Nelson, Xanedu Custom Publishing Gerry Yemen, Darden School of Business
While we are busy immersing students in key issues affecting the larger world, many of us feel pressure to include interactive technologies that will appeal to students and our own intellectual curiosity. The multimedia case “shows” rather than “tells” students important information they need to think critically. So how do we go about including innovative technology in classroom instruction with cases?
New Methods in Transdisciplinary Case Research
Moderators: Maribel Aponte and Carlos Alvarez, University of Puerto Rico
We will review three research experiences with multimedia cases. One is a pilot project on Developing Multimedia Case Studies on Business and Economics with MBA students at the University of Puerto Rico. The second was a study published in 2006: "Cuba: A Video Collection on the Emerging Alternative Business and Social Practices or a Dialogic Pedagogy." The third is a proposed study of the Picu Company in Puerto Rico.

EPISTEMOLOGICAL IMPERATIVES FOR CASE RESEARCH IN THE MANAGEMENT DISCIPLINES Jeff Elllis, Babson College
Case research often receives mixed reviews compared to the august method that exists behind pure scientific research. In most management schools and in many business journals case research takes a back seat to more quantitative work. This interactive session explores the assertion that case research is an epistemological imperative for most business disciplines because it can create knowledge of essential and high value that cannot be obtained in other ways. This session also will discuss how case research can meet the standards required of respected method while contributing to the exigencies of management practice.
AN IRB’S VERSION OF INFORMED CONSENT IN CASE RESEARCH: HELP OR HINDRANCE? Marie Rock, Bentley College
This paper briefly discusses the purpose and development of Institutional Review Boards. It explores developments in and responses to the rules concerning informed consent for social science disciplines when researchers are employing qualitative research methods. It explores the use of the informed consent form and describes the problems encountered by two experienced case writers. Finally, this paper makes broader suggestions for a formal position statement by the North American Case Research Association with regard to IRBsanctioned informed consent.
RESEARCH NOTES: THE MPRD CASE-STUDY DESIGN: PROGRESS, FRUSTRATIONS, AND LESSONS Stephen Graham-Hill, Kentucky State University
This paper describes the research design, initial results, and ultimate failure of a longitudinal multi-paradigm case-study (MPRD). In the original research proposal MPRD was seen as a response to calls for more relevant strategic management theories. The argument was that theory had become estranged from “real world” business practices; the result was a decline in relevance. Second, MPRD was intended to “go beyond” the “mixed method” (MM). MPRD was designed and tested during a two-year on-site investigation of a small, highly localized proprietary-brand soft-drink bottler. The author examines two possible causes of the failure.
