The construction of Hong Kong’s new airpor t located at Chek Lap Kok included 10 interlinked widespread road, bridge, reclamation, tunnel and rail projects that, together, formed the world’s largest integrated infrastructure project in the second half of the 20th century.
The West Kowloon Expressway is one of these key elements of infrastructure, providing access to the new airport from Hong Kong Island • The South Contract comprised and the southern part of Kowloon. the remaining length of the It also forms a major section of Expressway from Tai Kok Tsui to Route 3 which runs from Sai Ying the Western Harbour Crossing Pun on Hong Kong Island West to Toll Plaza, mostly at-grade, Yuen Long in the north-western part together with the Yau Ma Tei of the New Territories. The West Interchange which is one of the Kowloon Expressway comprises the largest and most complicated 4.2 km long dual 3-lane carriageway road interchanges in Hong Kong. connecting the Western Harbour Crossing with the remainder of Route 3 at Kwai Chung. It was built on the West Kowloon Reclamation which was carried out at the same time, in stages. The Expressway was appropriately divided into two contracts for concurrent design and construction : • The North Contract extended from Mei Foo Sun Chuen in the
north to Tai Kok Tsui in the south and consisted essentially of a 2.7 km long continuous dual 3-lane, viaduct, in addition to other roads and interchanges, including the Lai Wan Interchange. Over the majority of its length, the 4 track Lantau and Airport Railway (LAR) runs beneath the Expressway Viaduct.
