AWARDS, FELLOWSHIPS, GRANTS

                       Initiative for Development and Equity in Agriculture
                       (IDEAA) fellowship (1997-2000). A fellow and Team leader for the
                       Malawi team. Involved working with farmers on maize
                       production to improve food security and Agro processing,

                       Got a US Embassy maize mill grant for the farmers in the project
                       site which was run as an income generation activity for the
                       community to assist orphans and the less privileged aged
                       people.

                       The fellowship was funded by Rockefeller Foundation.

EXPERIENCE

POSITIONS HELD
i. National Coordinator – IDEAA Malawi, May 2002 to date
        Job responsibilities
    – Preparing project proposals for funding and preparation of end of project reports.
    – Liaising with donors.
    – Handling administration and human resource issues for project staff.
    – Coaching and training staff on Entrepreneurship skills
    – Coordinating implementation of the Cassava Commercialization Program which involved
        training farmers in cassava production, processing and marketing, formation of
        national and regional cassava growers and marketing association and promotion of
        drum ovens for production of cassava confectionery products including packaging of
        fermented cassava flour for sell by smallholder farmers. This resulted in installation of
        22 drum ovens for production of cassava confectioner products throughout Malawi.
    – Development of Business plans for cassava groups for funding by US Self Help Fund.
    – Organizing Quarterly National Management Committee (NMC) meetings for IDEAA
        which involves calling for meetings, preparation of documentation for the meetings, and
        offering of secretariat services to the committee. Over 15 NMC
    – Development and Implementation of a Sustainable Cassava seed Market which involved
        distribution of improved cassava seed to over 5,000 cassava farmers scattered across
        the country and instilling the culture of cassava seed multiplication as a business
        among the cassava farmers.
    – Development of community project proposals for farmers for funding by Self Help
        Grants.
    – Development and Implementation of Agriculture Marketing Information System aimed
        at improving market access of small holder farmers now called Malawi Agriculture
        Commodity Exchange (MACE) Project. This has involved setting up of 9 marketing
        information centres and points, supervision of collection and dissemination of
        agriculture prices in 9 markets and trade opportunity across the country and
        dissemination of the same through various channels such as the centres, email,
        website, Short Messaging Service (SMS), and the radio. The work has also involved
        collaboration with a number of partners such as International Crops Research Institute
          for the Semi Arid Tropics (ICRISAT), Global Sasakawa 2000 and Telekom Networks
          Malawi (TNM) Limited.
    –      Development and Implementation of Improving Agriculture Price Data which has
          involved development of standardized units of measuring, training of Ministry of
          Agriculture (MOA) Enumerators on standardized units of measure, spot field visits
          monitoring and dissemination of agriculture commodities prices from 45 markets
          through SMS.


    ii.       Economist – Malawi Agriculture Sector Investment Process (MASIP) Secretariat
              2000- 2002
        Job responsibilities
   -    Preparation of MASIP Partnership Agreement whose partners included government of
        Malawi, donors and other development partners for coordination of investment into the
        agriculture sector.
   - Preparation of business plan and budgets
   - Preparation of MASIP frame Work Document which stipulated issues which agriculture
        sector and government needed to address.
   - Organize monthly MASIP government and Donor meetings which aimed at reviewing
        progress on the MASIP process.
   - Liaising with donors on MASIP issues
   iii.     Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation (MOAI) – Senior Economist Trade
            Investment 1997 - 2000

         Job responsibilities

   -     Represent the Ministry on all agriculture trade matters from Bilateral             to
         Multilateral trade agreements such as Zimbabwe, SADC, COMESA and AGOA.
   -     Liaising with Ministry of Commerce and Industry on Agriculture trade issues

   iv. Personal Assistant to the Minister of Agriculture (Hon. Aleke Banda) 1997-2000

   Job Responsibilities

   -     Liaising with the Secretary for Agriculture and Heads of Departments on issues
         requiring follow up on behalf of the Minister.
   -     Preparing briefing notes for the Minister
   -     Preparing speeches, documentation for workshops.
   -     Preparing reports for local and international meetings which the Minister was
         attending.

   iv.      Economist responsible for Agriculture Marketing

   Job Responsibilities

   -     Involved in the implementation and Coordination of a World Bank funded
         multidisciplinary project called Agriculture marketing and Estate Development Project
         which involved Government and private sector institutions under agriculture marketing
         liberalization policies of Structural Adjustment.
   -     Training farmers and traders in Agriculture marketing & agribusiness skills
