a curriculum which aims at giving the participant maximum flexibility within the context of limited time
available and the need for maintaining strict professional standards. The Center offers the possibility of
combining electives and options in both Translation and Interpretation courses which permits the
participant to choose among the following workshops:

1.Intercultural Communication

      This workshop will offer the participant professional training while following a program of studies in
intercultural communication and providing an introduction to basic concepts of political science and
economics.

Course Description

Professional orientation:

Introduction to translation and interpretation as a modern profession. Presentation and discussion of the
history of translation and interpretation, structure of curricula in Argentina, and abroad, professional
organisations, professional associations, professional standards and ethics.

Introductory Practicum in simultaneous interpretation:

Techniques of repetition, condensing, reportage, substitution and decalage in oral discourse. Lectures in
English. Lectures in Spanish. Lab work in Spanish.

Basic translation exercises:

Introductory course in translation. Translation exercises into and out of English. Special emphasis on the
study of idiomatic units of terminology. Translation into Spanish and into English. Introduction to
parliamentary procedures and terminology of international conferences and diplomacy. Speeches from
international organisations such as the UN. UNESCO, WORLD BANK, and others.

Lab work:

Special emphasis on accents and speeches in both languages.

Research work:

Comparative governments and institutions.

2 Intercultural Communication and management studies

       This course will offer the participant exposure to the basic techniques of translation and
interpretation as well as extensive background studies in the principles of business management and
economics.

Course description

Introductory practicum in consecutive interpretation:

Introductory course taught in Spanish and in English. Mnemonic techniques, methods of note-taking and
use of symbols. Discourse analysis. Use of various types of texts of general topical nature. Interpretation
will be done into and out of English.

Public speaking as a tool in sight translation:

Special emphasis on discourse analysis needed for sight translation. Extensive practice in paraphrasing:
substitution and use of the inclusion hierarchy technique in sight translation. Sight translation of media
texts. Translation of financial, economic texts; texts related to the field of management. Translation of texts
from the social sciences with special emphasis on texts of economic orientation.

Lab work:

Special emphasis on condensing and summarising.

3 Intercultural Communication and General Studies

This course will offer the participant exposure to advanced techniques on translation and interpretation
while allowing the student to concentrate on study areas.

Course description

On-sight translation into and out of English of texts from applied sciences and technology fields. Study of
morphology and Greek and Latin affixes of use in scientific and technical fields. Practice in translation of
metric-English decimal and number units.

Bilingual consecutive interpretation. Pre-requisite. Participant must know note-taking techniques. Special
emphasis on legal type of translations.
Simultaneous interpretation of speeches from International organisations. Interpretation in and out of
English of speeches from press conferences, after dinner speeches and other general speeches.
Comparative speeches. Special emphasis on need of calque or use of borrowed terms in the foreign
language.

Speed translation:

Introduction to different methods of increasing speed in translation and for maximising total output.

Research work:

International Law and Comparative legal systems.

Pedagogical principles

     Our pedagogy is backed up by in-depth knowledge based on world class research. Our in-house
Newsletter includes teaching resources and research findings. Our staff members have industrial
experience in I&T; we have access to the best I&T practitioners in Buenos Aires, who are invited to our
Center to teach on their areas of expertise.

Flexibility

     We are aware that I&T training and education need a flexible approach. We have different offers for
the whole range of I&T training and education needs; for school leavers, busy professionals, and those
wishing to improve their standards.

     We have developed flexible and convenient formats to suit part-time students and some subjects can
be taken in distance mode. Programs are taught mostly early in the morning and in the evening to cater for
those who have a busy agenda.

     Our courses are designed in such a way that attendance will not be a problem for those who do not
have much free time- a two-hour, once a week meeting. Participants will have free access to our
laboratories for individual practice.

Duration

    The course will run from April to November, 70 hours tuition, that is 2 hours, once a week, plus 30
hours of lab practice that will be agreed upon with participant.

Entry requirements

Interview and placement test.
